How my dad’s heart attack motivates me to be healthy

Last week, my dad had a heart attack. His second one. After the first heart attack, he got down to a healthy weight, but it has crept back on, as have his unhealthy habits. He is recovering well and trying to get back on track. In the back of my mind, I wonder if his genes… or my mom’s will affect me someday. Which is why I try to do everything I can to stay healthy.

If your parents have heart disease, you’re more likely to develop it. That’s a risk factor you can’t change. But there are plenty of risk factors you can control:

  • Stop Smoking
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Lower your cholesterol levels
  • Lower high blood pressure
  • Be physically active every day
  • Manage diabetes
  • Stay at a healthy weight
  • Reduce stress
  • Limit alcohol

My dad’s heart attack was another reminder for me to work a little harder at being healthy… and to keep encouraging you to do the same.
