I’m a big fan of Chef Devin Alexander and have shared several of her recipes from her Biggest Loser cookbook series. But what I admire the most about her is that she lost 70 pounds about 15 years ago and has kept it off ever since. So for all of you who want to lose weight or maintain your weight loss in 2012, some tips from Devin.
FatFighterTV: How have you been able to maintain your 70 pound weight loss for so long?
Devin Alexander: I know this is cliché, but I didn’t go on a diet; I changed my lifestyle. I had yo-yo dieted for years and it never worked. Then I made a choice to make a change and I’ve found that much much easier than dieting. Plus, there is no “end” to a lifestyle change, so I never gained it back. And to be quite honest, I eat more decadently than I did 70 pounds ago since I now consciously enjoy what I eat and leave room for the foods I love. I used to go back and forth between deprivation and guilt! It was MIS-ER-A-BLE!
FFTV: What tips would you give people struggling to lose weight?
DA: Make a list of what they are eating for just one week and at what time of day. Then go through the list and really be honest about what it is that you just don’t want to give up along with the senseless eating or “extras.” Build your new “diet” around making sure that you leave calories for the foods you just don’t want to give up and replace some of the “extras” with a minimum of the recommended servings of fruits and veggies. Also, if you’re like me and derive great comfort by having a treat in front of the TV at night (trainers are gonna kill me for saying this…), it’s okay! But make sure it’s a treat that really satisfies you and that it is sensible. I often have 1/2 cup of frozen yogurt or a serving of baked chips. I know it’s comfort, but I’m okay with that because I leave room for it. I think the most important rule in losing weight, is “Don’t diet!” 🙂
FFTV: What tips would you give people trying to maintain their weight loss?
DA: I think it’s the same as people trying to lose. It’s pretty well known that if you stick to ANY diet, you will lose (or maintain) weight. The thing is that most of us can’t, if for no other reason, it’s not practical. So instead of setting strict doctrines, come up with guidelines for yourself that match YOUR cravings. Oh, and MAKE SURE to eat breakfast. When I was dieting, I would skip breakfast because I always craved food later in the day and thought I was doing myself a favor. NOT TRUE! A lot of people don’t know this, but Sumu wrestlers actually starve early in the day then load up on food late in the day in attempt to look like they do! Gasp!
Had not heard that about Sumu wrestlers – wow! Don’t do that, okay? 😉
