You’re driving, in a rush and want a quick snack… but everywhere you look, all signs point to calorie overload. Does this sound familiar?
When fast food is all you have time for, which snacks do popular chains offer that are lower in calories? Here are some suggestions from Consumer Reports:
- At Taco Bell - say ‘no’ to the Nachos Bell Grande (790 calories) and ‘yes’ to the Crunchy Taco (150 calories)
- At KFC - instead of the Honey Barbecue Wings (540 calories), choose the Honey Barbecue Snacker (220 calories)
- At Starbucks - pass on the Grande Chocolate Chip Frappuccino (450 calories), and sip on the Grande Light Coffee Frappuccino, no whip (150 calories)
- At Burger King - instead of the king-size French fries (600 calories), get the 4-piece Chicken Tenders with sweet and sour sauce (215 calories). It’s actually the child portion which is a good strategy to getting fewer calories.
Nutrition Consultant, Andrea Hill, RD has another tip. She says, “A lot of the fast food restaurants now have their value menu which typically has smaller portions, so I think that’s an instant way for someone to make a wiser choice. If you go to the value menu it’s going to be lighter on your waist and on your wallet.”
If you’re not sure which item has fewer calories, ask the restaurant for its nutrition information so you know just what you’re getting. And remember, food high in fat should only be an occasional treat.
