Before you blame those extra pounds on slow metabolism, let technology get to the truth. A device called the Body Gem tells you exactly how many calories you burn a day so you can reach your healthy weight with more precision.

All you have to do is breathe into the Body Gem for seven to ten minutes to find out your resting metabolic rate (RMR) - the number of calories you burn when you’re not doing anything. Then you can calculate how much to eat and exercise to lose or maintain your weight.

“It’s measuring the rate of oxygen consumption, which correlates very closely with the level of energy that’s being expended by the body,” explains Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., Chief Exercise Physiologist for the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

In the past, you had to multiply your weight by a certain number to find out your metabolism, but that number could sometimes be off by hundreds of calories, and it was more of a “one size fits all” total. This device measures your individual metabolism that’s unique to you.

“If you have that information it can make their program more successful,” says Bryant. “Ultimately they’ll see results, they’ll get healthy, and they’ll continue to work out.”

I tried the Body Gem. I have to admit, I gagged a bit… but I have a strong gag reflex in general! Overall, it was well worth it to have the precise results.
