Looking for a way to eat less? Aren’t we all?! Chewing gum just may help… at least a little. According to a new report, it can reduce cravings and control your appetite.

The study asked 60 people aged 18 to 54 to have a sweet and salty afternoon snack after chewing a sweetened gum or not chewing any gum. Hunger, appetite and cravings were rated immediately after lunch, and then hourly.

Results show participants who chewed gum ate 25 fewer calories and specifically had 39 fewer calories of the sweet snack. And they had 11 fewer salty snack calories. The study also found chewing gum suppressed hunger and the desire to eat at one, two and three hour intervals after lunch.

A similar study among people not actively trying to manage their weight found chewing gum reduced snack intake by average of 36 calories.

The combination of both studies shows those who chewed gum had 47 fewer calories on average of the sweet snack.

Every little bit counts, right?

By the way, the study was sponsored by the Wrigley Science Institute. It was presented at the 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting of The Obesity Society.
