We all want to avoid cancer. And now a landmark study tells us a few things we can do to keep the potentially deadly disease away.
A report from the World Cancer Research Fund finds the link between body fat and cancer is very strong. And the best ways to lower your risk are to stay slim, and avoid too much red meat and alcohol.
Researchers found a link to six types of cancer - including colorectal and post-menopausal breast cancer - five more than they found in the last report 10 years ago.
Some important recommendations:
- Eat processed meats like ham and bacon sparingly - they increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
- Have no more than 17-ounces of red meat a week - the report found a stronger link than ever between red meat and colorectal cancer
- If you drink, limit your alcohol to two drinks a day for men and one a day for women
- Mothers should breast-feed exclusively for the first six months after they give birth to protect against breast cancer
- Be moderately active - the equivalent to brisk walking - for at least 30 minutes a day. If you’re in shape aim for 60 minutes or more of moderate activity or 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day
The report suggests a few other things you can do to lower your risk of cancer: avoid sugary drinks, eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and limit the amount of salt in your diet.
