Want to trim some fat and calories from your Thanksgiving feast… without feeling like you’re depriving yourself? Here are some ideas to help you lighten up this Turkey Day.
First, some tips from the American Dietetic Association:
- For dips, sauces and pie toppings, use non-fat yogurt or fat-free sour cream
- Use egg substitutes in place of whole eggs
- Try evaporated skim milk instead of whole milk in dessert recipes
- Use low-sodium, fat-free chicken broth in your mashed potatoes
- Top casseroles with almonds instead of fried onion rings
- Choose reduced-fat cheeses for salads and casseroles
- Combine apples, cranberries, and pears for a tasty salad, fruit crisp or topping for the turkey
- Use whole-grain bread and wild rice for the stuffing or as a side dish
I also found some tasty, healthy Thanksgiving recipes from the Mayo Clinic. There are some lightened-up versions of traditional favorites and new ideas for you to try this year like a flavorful white bean dip for an appetizer, roasted turkey with balsamic brown sugar sauce (YUM!), a variety of sides and salads, and plenty of desserts. The recipes are lower in fat, calories, and sodium than your traditional Thanksgiving fare. Take a look here. Bon Appetit!
