Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. You are so right about how we Americans are conditioned to eat compared to those in other countires. I have seen that in my overseas travels, as well. Glad you are eating healthy. :)

FFTV,
When I allow breads, pastas, potatoes, rice into my diet I gain weight rapidly. Went on Atkins (strict) in 1998-2001 and got down to my high school weight. Off the wagon and weight gain was alarmingly fast. My family has a propensity to be chubby. Spring of 2008 I decided to simply count calories and eat as much of the calories from fish and vegetables as I could. I did lose weight. Counting calories I had oatmeal, bread, chocolate, beans, salads, cookies, cakes, etc. I was not as miserable as I thought I would be. Kept active with walking at least an hour each day and drank much water. No silver bullet here, but we Americans are indeed conditioned to eating like no other place I have visited in my overseas career and I do believe that we have been used to eating fats and starches in lethal combination with fatty meats. We believe in our rewards. Dr. Kessler's recent book exploring why we overeat may offer much needed background to the underlying problem. If diets worked we wouldn't be fat and feel the need to chase every remedy that comes down the pike. Good work here, FFTV; I enjoy the site.

Hi Tracy,

Thank you so much for stopping by, and for your thoughtful comment. You are right - this post is based on mainstream nutritional information, but there are other posts that discuss other points of view. It's funny, because I also hear that I need to feature more mainstream posts. Anyway, I try to include several sides of the weight loss issue on FFTV. I would love to know more about your weight loss, and possibly feature your story, if you are interested.

This is the exact diet I got fat on. Seriously. Low fat, low calorie, whole grains, low/non fat dairy, lean meat (and no meat at times), veggies, fruit, legumes, low sugar (well, added sugar - carbohydrates turn to glucose in the body, regardless. I reached the highest weight of my life on this diet, and felt horrible. And I'm not the only one.

There is so much more information out there now, from eminent doctors, researchers and scientists, that confirms my (and others) experience with this type of diet (actually, this info has been around for literally centuries - just in the last 40 years or so it has gotten pushed aside). It's worth looking into. Not only have people lost weight by limiting carbohydrate foods (to varying degrees), they have reversed or improved the symptoms of many common 'diseases of civilization'.

I think you're doing a great thing here, but please, please look beyond the mainstream nutritional information that has led many of us down the road to worse - not better - health.
