Irving - I am so sorry about what happened to your wife - that is awful. Did an inexperienced doctor perform her procedure?

I have to disagree with the comment made by ed that dermatologists and plastic surgeons are looking to monopolize the procedure to make all the money. I've learned quite a lot about this procedure since my wife has been permanently disfigured and won a malpractice lawsuit against the doctor who did her procedure. Plastic surgeons are NOT looking to monopolize this procedure--in fact most of them do not do it and have not bought the machine because smart lipo is pretty much a gimmick that doesn't have any appreciable benefits over traditional lipo, despite the claims of the manufacturer and the docs who perform it. Most of the time it does end up in the hands of a doc who hasn't been sufficiently trained and sometimes the docs doing this procedure are not even surgeons and have never completed any surgical residencies whatsoever. There have been cases of radiologists, psychiatrists and other MDs with no surgical training whatsoever doing this. In most cases, it's the docs who buy the Smart Lipo machines who are money hungry, not the plastic surgeons. Since insurance companies have been reducing the payouts to doctors for their services, more and more of them are looking for ways to increase their bottom line. This generally isn't the case with plastic surgeons since most of the procedures they perform are not covered by insurance and paid out of pocket and up front by the patient. Plastic surgeons are simply growing tired of having to fix the botch jobs done to unsuspecting patients by these butchers. The general public is usually unaware of the fact that these docs aren't plastic surgeons, or that there is a considerable difference in the training of a board certified plastic surgeon versus a "certified cosmetic surgeon", which many smart lipo providers claim to be. In reality, there is actually no such thing as a "certified cosmetic surgeon", and many smart lipo providers are counting on the fact that the public will not know this and assume that they have higher credentials than they actually do. A "certified cosmetic surgeon" likely took a weekend course in liposuction whereas a board certified plastic surgeon has spent years in residency to acquire their knowledge and skills. Any doc who buys a smart lipo machine will be shown how to use the machine and this constitutes "training" or "certification" that they tout. Most of these docs don't actually come right out and admit what their training actually consisted of, whereas legitimate board certified plastic surgeons will and do by nature of their board certification. So it's not the plastic surgeons looking to monopolize and make a buck. Most don't even want this procedure.

Many dermatologist and plastic surgeons are fighting to monopolize this procedure in order for then to make all the $$$$. It is true that is a fairly new procedure, but a well trained physician,(don't matter specialty) can do it. The procedure also is not for everyone. Talk to your doctor and let him explain the procedure to you including complications.

Hey Leila,

I would think the Vaser Lipo may have some of the same concerns as the Smart Lipo - that it's getting in the hands of doctors and others who haven't had the proper training. I would suggest contacting the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to see what they've heard.

Wow that is pretty scary. It is really important to research your surgeon. I've been looking for info on lipo methods online and I've read several similar stories about burns from SmartLipo. Do you know anything about Vaser Lipo? I guess it uses ultrasound waves to break up fat instead of a laser. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Leila
