You still need to stay away from certain kinds of tomatoes. Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes has now made 756 people sick across the country.
The CDC says this may be the largest outbreak of Salmonella infections from tomatoes in the U.S. – it’s linked to raw plum, Roma and round tomatoes.
While there have been no direct deaths from the outbreak, the CDC says a man in his 60s who died from cancer in Texas had an infection with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Saintpaul that may have contributed to his death.
Texas has been the hardest hit with 330 people becoming sick. New Mexico is second with 80 cases. Here is a map from the CDC that shows the outbreak from state to state:
Investigators are still trying to find the source of the contamination.

yeah, I totally forgot about this as I chowed down on Caprese Salad at a wedding last weekend – with yellow AND red tomatoes. I managed to escape, tho
Thanks again FatFighter. This story just gets more and more weird.
I like the map.
And, where in the heck is the USDA in all of this? I wonder if their ranks have been depleted like the now infamous FDA.
Love
This is really scary! Thanks for letting us know which tomatoes we need to stay away from.
So these food poison outbreaks are really quite scary. Would buying local have helped in a case like this or is the salmonella in all these states’ crops?
OOOH! I forgot to add…I am so happy that cherry and grape tomatoes were excluded from this! My daughter LOVES them!
They are still trying to find how this outbreak started but I believe buying local is not included – I am not sure, though. I will check and let you know.
