You’ve seen them on the labels – those food allergy warnings that say “may contain traces of peanuts” or “made in the same factory as peanuts.” The warnings are voluntary. But health officials in the U.S. and Canada are debating setting standards – they’re concerned that consumers are so confused they’re starting to ignore the warnings altogether.

The general public might be confused and ignore those warnings, but I don’t know any mom of a severely allergic child (and I know a few) that ignores those warnings! Still, better documentation of allergenic ingredients is needed. Progress is being made, but more is needed.
