The lights are low… the music’s thumping… and it’s time to take it all off! Err… actually the music may be thumping, but the lights are the usual brightness of an aerobics studio, and the only thing taking off is the popularity of Strip Aerobics.

The classes combine striptease moves with aerobics – some classes include pole dancing; others, you just work that body. My adventurous fellow blogger, Zandria, tried a class in the DC area last week and wrote about it at Zandria.us. Here’s a little snippet:

There were a lot of squats. We did squats with and without the use of a pole (there were a number of poles scattered throughout the room because they also offer Pole Fit classes there). We would hold a squat as we bounced our booties back and forth and up and down. We would squat, then open our knees wide and bring them back together again (this is called a “butterfly”). Stand up, repeat. Hurt.

Yep, I would say bouncing your booty that much would cause some pain. And Fabio Comana, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise, says Strip Aerobics can definitely be a tough workout.

“Pole is very difficult and potentially dangerous for the unskilled,” explains Comana. “Urban Striptease caters to the mainstream and certainly has good cardio and some muscular endurance training. Most of all, it is fun and you get out of it what you put into it.”

Fun seems to be a big reason why the classes are so hot. And keep women like Zandria, coming back for more.

“It was a great cardio workout, AND it was fun, AND it was something new and different, AND if I continue with it I could potentially learn some…new moves?” says Zandria. “I’ve already talked to some of the girls I went to the first class with, and they’re interested in going back to take a Pole Fit class. So, yes, I would definitely go back!”

New moves, huh? Sounds interesting. But is all this just another passing workout trend… or is Strip Aerobics here to stay?

“Pole dancing, I believe, is a fad given its logistics (needing a pole) and difficulty,” says Comana. “Urban Striptease (Tricia Murphy’s concept) on the other hand is simple, utilizes, chairs, etc., therefore has a broader appeal to a more diverse population of women.”

A population of women looking for a good workout, some fun, and are ready to release their inner hottie.
