Here’s proof that you don’t need fancy equipment to get a good workout. Last night in Boot Camp, we did the towel workout – all we used was a towel and a partner to do several arm exercises like lateral raises and these tricep extensions you see Susan doing in the pictures.
Our partners pulled down on the towel as we lifted it up and down.
PreFit Personal Trainer, Chad Welday, says the good thing about working your arms with a towel is you use other smaller muscles you normally wouldn’t use if you were doing the same exercises with weights. You also have to focus on balance because of the resistance from the person pulling the towel behind you.
It was fun to do something different. It made Holly happy… after the pain wore off.
Anyone else ever used towels in their workouts? What did you think of it?

It’s all resistance – your muscles don’t know if it’s a dumbbell or a rubber band or a $1000 piece of gym equipment or partner assisted resistance using a towel.
An added benefit of the towel training is that an “attentive” workout partner can judge your strength levels and adjust the resistance to match yours exactly.
Try doing that with one of the chrome plated machines at the gym
Thanks for the reminder – My clients are going to pay for this today
I liked using the towels. It was nice to be able to communicate with your partner about varying the resistance. It was also fun to switch up the boot camp workout a bit. Holly really does look happy!
We use towels in Boot Camp at various times….a tug o’ war for one minute or towel drags across the gym, maybe traveling push ups with the feet on the towel. Nice post!
BTW, Q – my arms are sore today, so I guess it worked!
great idea for the triceps! I used to make my boot campers push a towel across the floor. They hated it, but it really workout our shoulders. (and cleaned the floors at the same time!)
Nice, workout mommy – way to get the floors cleaned with a workout!
I’ve never seen the towel tip before. Great idea! Then you can work out anywhere!
I like this! I exercise alone, but I wonder about attaching some bungie chords to the towels and doing some of this solo by stepping on them…
Thanks for the ideas!
