Meet: Kath (KathEats.com)
Age: 25
Occupation: PT Blogger, FT student getting a Master’s in Nutrition to become a Registered Dietitian
Pounds Lost: 30
How long she’s kept the weight off: One and a half years
Kath ’s weight gain was because of a combination of enjoying the college life and living with a foot problem. She’s back in school now, but this time she’s 30 pounds lighter. Here’s how she did it… and why she deserves a Weight Loss WooHoo! - just FFTV’s fun way of celebrating healthy weight.
How Kath gained the weight:
“I was never really that unhealthy to begin with, but my portions were out of control when I was in college. I also loved 5:00 cocktail hour with my roommate. And alcohol always leads to eating late at night. I had a fused joint in my foot - for probably two and a half years I limited myself from weight-bearing exercise, so that’s also what lead to my gain in the first place.”
Turning point
“I really decided at Christmas in 2004 - the month before I graduated - I just said, ‘I don’t like the way I look, how I feel, and I need to do something about it. But with the foot surgery coming two months later, I knew without being able to exercise it would be really hard.”
How she shed the pounds:
“First and foremost, I started cooking for myself. I got my first apartment right when I graduated from college and I also had my foot surgery early that year. Everything was just kind of good timing. It was the perfect opportunity to just say, okay now I’m going to start losing weight.
My then boyfriend (now husband) and I joined the Y as soon as we could. I did a ton of Spinning classes because they were easy on my foot, and a ton of elliptical. I’d say probably 6 months post surgery, I was able to do Boot Camp classes and much more normal activities.”
“From the start, it was just the old-fashioned approach”
Weekly workouts:
“I run twice a week, I do cardio machines three times a week, I do Spinning class once a week - I basically try to do something different than I did the day before. I’m doing something seven days a week, but it’s something different every day and some days are much lighter than others.”
Her tips:
“I honestly believe in eating as many whole foods as possible. If you stick to whole foods, your decisions just seem obvious. I always recommend people eat whole foods because you can eat more and you can be so much more full and feel satisfied.
Move and walk whenever you can. If you have the time, you should be moving.”
Weakness:
“Dessert buffets are my number one weakness. I have no self control. If you send me to a table with 15 kinds of cake, I have to try them all.”
Favorite recipe:
“If there’s one recipe that defines me, it’s oatmeal. I have a whole tribute page on my blog with tons of combos. But my banana whipped recipe is my favorite.”
Kath’s Weight Loss WooHoo!:
“Wearing dresses. I always used to hide under skirts and long shirts - but now I can wear a dress and feel tall and pretty!”
And she looks just like she feels, doesn’t she? Go, Kath!
