*Note to self* – eat more vegetables, nuts, and fish. And now is a good time to do it. A new report says if you stick closely to a Mediterranean-style diet, it dramatically reduces your risk of cancer, heart disease, and other major chronic illnesses.
The diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, grains, and healthy fats like olive oil and it’s low in red meat, dairy products and alcohol. It also includes, nuts, beans, and seeds.
Scientists analyzed the results of 12 major studies that looked at more than 1.5 million people. They found the chance of developing all types of cancer was six percent lower in those who followed the Mediterranean diet, being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease went down 13-percent, and the likelihood of dying overall dropped nine percent.
The study is published on bmj.com
I tend to eat a lot of the foods in the Mediterranean diet, but I often have chicken and turkey too… and of course, the “occasional” gourmet chocolate. How about you – what’s your eating style?

In many ways, my diet is not that far from the Mediterranean diet! I eat vegan plus seafood, no dairy no eggs. I never add fat to my diet however, if I want olive oil, I’ll eat an olive
I really believe in getting fat from whole foods. Fish, nuts, not so difficult, and it passes the is it working test!
I so wish that I liked fish more than I do! Even just eating more fish is not a simple thing. What about pollutants and over-fishing and farm-raised vs wild fish? Food can be so complicated.
Thanks for the article. Guess it’s time to make my husband happy and cook more fish.
I’m a big fan of the fruits and veggies. the stats are pretty interesting about eating a mediterranean diet. I usually eat similar to it, but i also eat chicken and turkey.
I like this one…I am pretty close already. Nice post!
What is that meal in the picture?! It looks dee-lish (and healthy too, but I don’t really care about that part)!!!!!
It is such a great way of eating, the Mediterranean Diet, is. I am actually teaching a workshop on the Mediterranean Diet in Boston at the BCAE next week!
