Earlier this week, we talked about how a lot of people are chowing down on comfort foods to ease their money woes. Now a new poll from the American Psychological Association shows the stress from this rocky economy is hurting our emotional and physical health. In the survey, more than half of Americans said they were irritable or angry, tired and not getting enough sleep… and almost half said they self-medicate by overeating or indulging in unhealthy foods. So, I thought it would be fun to do our own survey here at FFTV:
Me – I’m making sure to keep exercising so I don’t get extra stressed since I’m a known worry wart. And I have noticed I’m eating a little more chocolate than usual, but that may be because my husband bought me a big box for our anniversary…. oh, and one of my favorites (Lindt hazelnut) has been on sale (just trying to save money, you know?!) Looking forward to your votes and comments!

None of the above! I’m maintaining my regular fitness program. Denial is a beautiful thing!
Yesterday I took a look at my 401K and nearly fell off my chair. Now that I think about it, I had a bagel in the morning which I almost never do. Maybe there’s a nexus there.
I am soo comfortable with comfort foods! But alas, I have to cut down… high school reunion in a week! But yeah, this economic climate might make it harder for everyone to be healthy. Healthier foods, like fresh fruits & veggies, are going to be more expensive (thank you, rising gas and shipping costs), so some budgets might only allow junkier foods. Also, we might be in front of the TV more (that means snacking!) if other forms of entertainment don’t remain affordable.
I’ve been pretty successful at maintaining my healthy eating habits during all of this … so far!
I’m finding that we have to take time-outs from all of the media coverage — which is a little difficult for me as I’m an avid CNBC viewer (usually on in background if working in office).
Great conversation to start!

Yes Tom, I just got my quarterly statement today – so depressing. Time for another chocolate… (kidding!) No. More.
You’re right, Colette – time-outs from the news are a must to not get too depressed and freaked out! I just want enough info to stay informed, then move on for the day.
And Megan – with more TV watching, we definitely have to watch those snacks! Must get healthy ones.
I don’t partake in a lot of comfort foods. If I get anxious, I actually sleep more. I need to make myself exercise more to relieve stress.
i don’t know if it’s the economy but I do notice myself eating more ‘comfort’ foods like deep dish (OK, I ate that once in the last three months), or mac and cheese, or even oatmeal – just stuff that FEELS good. Ice cream too. I do know that when money is tight, not too many people will shell out for Whole Foods when cheap fast food is around the corner…
