Love her or hate her, I thought it would be fun to turn away from Sarah Palin as a politician for a bit and explore something more up my alley – nutrition. When I first heard how much the VP nominee loves moose meat, it made me realize how little I actually know about it. I’ve never tried moose meat so if anyone out there has, please enlighten me.
My first question is, what does it taste like? Is it like all the other things out there that “taste like chicken?” I read somewhere that it’s a mild, lean meat. Personally, I’m a poultry and fish kind of gal, but I’m still curious.
So, how does it stack up nutritionally? NutritionData.com lists 3 ounces (85 grams) of roasted moose meat as having 114 calories, 1 gram of fat. and 25 grams of protein. Not bad. Here are the rest of the details:
How does that compare to say… another lean meat I don’t eat – Sirloin Strip? The steak has the same amount of protein as the moose meat – 25 grams, but more calories – 180 – and way more fat – 8 grams!
Me, I’ll stick to my poultry and fish. But I’m curious… anyone out there tried moose meat? If you haven’t, do you want to?
Oh… one more question – if the plural of goose is geese, why isn’t the plural of moose “meese”? Anyone?

I have a hard time getting past Palin’s voice, I have never tried Moose meat!
ha! I am CRACKING up over the ‘meese’ comment!
I’ve never tried moose meat, but it looks like it would be a tough chew to me.
I’ll stick to poultry and fish too!
I have had moose meat! A couple of times, actually, as a roast. It’s got a very mild, almost (but not quite) beefy flavor and not tough at all. It was pretty good, actually.
I’m a “fish-a-terian” (veggie + no chicken/beef/pork); but since am heading to the northwest territory on business next week, I’ll see if I can get the local scoop on moose meat!
Cheers, Coach Colette
I’ve eaten some pretty crazy stuff (like rattlesnake), so I’d definitely try it. And while I’m not a huge red meat eater, I do eat it occasionally. We really like the mild, almost sweet flavor of bison, and love using it for burgers and chili. I imagine moose could be similar? Oh yeah, and why is the plural of mouse, mice, and not mouses? (k, not as funny as moose/meese, but still a valid question)
Yay! Someone who tried moose meat stopped by! Thanks, John! Interesting that it’s not tough – for some reason I thought it would be. Now, if someone could just help me figure out the moose/meese thing…
To hunt moose, do you need a nasaly voice—maybe to imitate the mating call?
Seriously…if Palin gets into office, maybe she’ll help popularize moose as a healthy alternative—perhaps even push for some earmarks for moose farms.
Is moose the next buffalo?
Moose is good! I had it once because a friend’s dad had shot one. If you’re lucky to pull a moose tag to hunt – a once in a lifetime event here in Colorado – you basically have enough meat to last you, and all your friends, for a very, very long time. So far my husband hasn’t pulled a moose tag, though he keeps trying. Instead, he hunts antelope, deer and elk both in our state and in Wyoming. We’re lucky to have such a terrific source of healthy, lean meat…or so we tell the kids.
I pass all meats. You care only about fat but don’t think what is going into your mouths.
Being from Wyoming, I have been raised on Moose, Elk, Antelope, Deer. There is not an animal that we hunted for that we didn’t eat. Whether you have one or three you have moose. I was surprised at the amount of press this got. I forget most people shop at the store, but seriously, our freezer is stuffed with meat we hunted and should we want fish, we just drop in a line, we even raise chickens and hens and grow most of our own veggies. I like Moose, it does not have the gamey flavor that some wild meat has, like say Buffalo. Ok I could go on forever.
It’s so true, Heidi – I shop at the store and forgot that people hunt for food, especially moose. I guess you just get caught up in your own world. It’s always good to hear about how others live. Thanks so much for enlightening me!
Ummm… This Mama Cooks – I gotta ask, what’s a “tag” and pulling a moose tag?
I would think it wouldn’t be very tasty since it is so low in fat. However, I enjoyed reading the comments from the reader who did try it. I’ve been to many game restaurants and have never seen it on the menu. I’m sure Sarah Palin would love to share how she once shot a moose, (just kidding) if she hasn’t already shared it!
I’m married to a hunter and introduced to the world of “hunting for your own meat” when we met. I will try anything once and moose meat is good but not fantastic. I know this sounds awlful but it depends on what the moose eats in their diet. If the moose is eating items available in the forest then it tends to be a bit gamey, not my cup of tea but I appreciate the resources available to us and as long as we respect what nature gives us and we give back its all good!
Kari,
I had no idea you were married to a hunter! You’re so right – we gotta respect what nature gives us… and give back.
I eat moose as my only source of red meat. One moose can easily yield 400 + lbs of good meat. The taste is very similar to beef, and tenderness varies from moose to moose. A large old moose can contain a lot of tough meat.
And by the way, the plural of moose, is moose.
I am actually eating a moose steak as I am typing this. mmmmm, moose
Brendan,
Thanks for sharing – interesting that the taste varies from moose to moose. Also interesting that the plural of moose is “moose.”
I love moose meat! Its awesome fried with onions and a tiny drop of water to make a juice from it. yum!
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog.
Cheers! Sandra. R.
Sandra R – Thanks for stopping by!
I was raised on moose my whole life and there really is nothing better. It all depends on how its killed and the age and where it lived. If it lived in the swamps or hills that will change the taste.
shyle – That is so interesting that some of the taste depends on where the moose lived. Is it because of what it eats?
