I don’t like all the holiday candy (christmas, valentines) that loves to tempt me whenever I’m in the store. I try to keep a bag of organic baby carrots in my fridge to snack on when I crave something sweet.
I love walking outside…but I *hate* walking in the freezing cold/rain. So I have now forced myself to go to a gym when it is too cold to enjoy the outdoor air…I try to do a class on those days.
honestly getting my but off the bed or the couch which are under covers..what do I do…make myself move- take the dogs for a walk or just at least moving. I hate the cold wet windy weather
Please don’t enter me in this contest but I hate having Raynaud’s Syndrome in the winter. When I go out, my fingers turn blue, then white as all the blood leaves them. Then, when I go inside, the blood all rushes back at once and they turn red and it’s painful. Yuk.
It is just too cold to get in as much walking as I do in summer and forget bike riding altogether with the snow, slush, and ice. I let myself get really low on groceries and then rationalize that I need to take the car because I won’t be able to carry everything. My cooking also gets heavier in winter — stick-to-the-ribs cooking. The salads and fruits I enjoy the rest of the year just make me feel cold from December through March.
I can’t believe I walked all summer, in hundred
degree heat that forced me to walk at 5am or 9pm, but I stayed motivated and walked an hour
a day….only to have winter derail, demolish,
demotivate me so completely even my eating is
way off track. What am I doing to counter act
it, besides chocolate which doesn’t work, I am
searching for something indoors to try that is
not too expensive. Gliders look interesting, so
sign me up for the giveaway, maybe the universe
will smile on me and send something my way to
help me find my way back to a better, healthy
place where I move my body in ways that don’t
involve food.
I struggle with the yummy high calorie foods during the holidays. I have opted for lower calorie & fat variations by changing up recipes when the ingredients permit. For example, fat free sour cream or cream cheese in dips in stead of full fat. I also enjoy my Wii Fit *when the kids aren’t playing some other game on the Wii* and a few indoor walking videos I have.
Like you I have a severe dislike for the cold winter months. From Halloween on through Valentine’s Day there is always food (junk food) around and everything is a big holiday celebration. This year I joined weight watchers 2 weeks before Thanksgiving (i know, what was I thinking)!! That has helped me stay on track! the accountability and the support from my meeting and twitter friends is a huge help. I am experimenting with exercises until I find the one I like and the one that works for me knee and ankle issues. I have ligament and cartilage damage that I will have repaired in June (I am a teacher so I have to wait until summer and then I will be in a cast all summer ~ what fun) so I am always on the prowl for low-impact fun work outs!!
Sorry this is so long – i am more of a talker than exerciser! haha
Motivation – motivation – motivation. It’s hard to get up and out and dressed in cold, gray depressing weather. Bring on the warmer temperatures!
Yes, sassyjac2000 – I am also tempted by all the treats Halloween through Valentine’s Day!
ocampo – I so miss walking with you and the MMs!!
I struggle with not being able to go to water areobics. To overcome it I switch up my work outs and do my yoga and indoor activites.
sandy – I have such a hard time getting out of bed, too! Why does it have to be so hard?
herblady – so sorry you have to deal with that. That sounds awful.
sito – I’m big on walking outside, too. If it’s not too cold, I still bundle up and walk to the grocery store or post office. But most of the time, I just try to exercise indoors. Do you try wokrout videos?
Catharine – You sound a lot like me! But we gotta keep at it – workout videos are perfect, IMO. So, if you don’t win this one, I have a few more contests coming up!
Good for you, gtowngirl for changin those recipes! I do the same and there’s not much difference in taste. Do you like the indoor walking videos? I’ve never tried them…
Hey jen – Yes, the treats are everywhere for such a long time, aren’t they? Good for you for joining Weight Watchers – glad it’s going well for you. So sorry about your knee and ankle problems – that stinks! But you’re on the right track – keep trying exercises until you find one you like that works for you and you will be all set. That’s the key – finding something you like.
In the winter I struggle with the cold. I hate being cold, I’d rather snuggle up on the couch then get up and workout. But this winter I have to overcome it cause I’m getting married in 4 months.
Sara – yes, bring them on! Until then, I will be turning into a workout video queen.
Just_Kelly – Smart idea to switch up the workouts for now. I am doing the same, but somehow this winter seems tougher than others so I’m stocking up on workout videos!
Tiff – Congrats!! That is so exciting! So, are you working out at home to avoid the cold?
Okay, so I’m spoiled because I live in So Cal, but we never get a change of pace. I have yard work 365 days a year – no snow to shovel. I know I’m not getting alot of sympathy, but how do I break up my routine? I like knowing what I’m going to do every day, but then how do I break it up? That’s where I am right now.
I absolutely hate, hate, hate the winter months (even though I live in South Texas where the coldest thus far has only been 40 degrees). Unfortunately, I have to deal with it when it comes time to pick up the kids (regardless of weather). So, I guess you can say that I deal with it no matter how I feel about it…even though I really enjoy working out in my home and that’s about the only way it gets done cause we only have one car and my husband uses it (it’s stick and I can’t drive it so I think he likes that) LOL!!!
Please enter me…I’d love to be chosen for this one. I’ve always seen the infomercials but have never been able to get it.
-barbara
cathys997 – You’re right – No sympathy.
Just jealousy.
barbara – Your body acclimates no matter what the temperatures are where you live, so I can see how 40 would be cold for you.
You are entered! Thanks for stopping by FFTV.
I’d much rather go outside and do a walk while the kids ride their bikes, or even a quick run, but when it’s so bitterly cold, I refuse to bundle up and exercise outside. I too struggle making myself go to the gym, so the kids and I head to the basement and try doing exercises together. That makes it more fun, but I still don’t get the good workout I get in the summer months!
motivation. i can’t blame it on the weather, though. I am horrible when it is nice out too! BUT once i start I am good, I just need the upstart kick in the butt to start moving!
Dieting is a lifestyle so I am conscious of what I eat. But during the winter months, it’s hard not to avoid those sweet treats and left over turkey and ham from thanksgiving and Christmas. I try to maintain my workout routine indoors as much as possible but I absolutely hate during abs and crunches due to an arch in my back (maybe because of my big butt). This gliding workout would be a great way to rejuvenate my workout routine and do abs without the crunches.
dfarris – good idea to do exercises with the kids! But I know what you mean – it’s just not the same as the great outdoor workouts we can get when the weather is nice.
karissa – So your motivation problem is non weather-related, huh? Consider this your kick in the booty to get moving!
Velma – you are cracking me up about the arch in your back! This workout may be just what you need.
I love using the gliding discs! I’ve not seen the exercise video, but I’ve used them with lunges at my gym before.
Winter is hard here, too. It’s hard to force myself to do things outside, and when at home it’s hard to force myself to exercise instead of clean or hang out on the net. This year, though, I’ve been committed to being active. Taking my son to ski lessons helps. And the fact that my daughter LOVES going to the gym with me is a big motivator. And the kids and I have been coming up with creative way to do active play inside. And last – I’m wearing a pedometer. It’s a little bit of motivation for me – a constant reminder of how active (or not active)I’ve been during the day.
cathy – Sounds like you’ve got a lot of great ideas to keep you active this winter – good for you! It’s nice to hear that your kids like being active, too.
I am a walker, usually walk 4 miles, up & down hills, and I have not been able to walk since Thanksgiving. My feet get frozen in the winter.
Rhonda – I’m a walker to and so I know what you mean. Have you ever tried these Hotties toe warmers? They can really help!
“Fatfighter”, it was great seeing you in action:) Please include me in this giveaway!
The hardest thing for me is:
1. It gets dark earlier
2. Colder days, mean making big pots of comfort foods (like my fave-chicken & dumplings)
3. Exercise:If it’s not made to look easy or at least fun, I am having no part of it ( Oh, that’s year round)
PS-I couldn’t find the thread on sugars/carbs addictive as nicotine. But yes I am in the process:)
LissaL – I’m the same with numbers 1 and 3, a little with number 2 but not as much.
And here is the carbs/cigarettes post.
I struggle with craving sweets in the winter.
I keep snacks like popcorn and fat free crackers to munch on, when I get a sweet attack.
If that does not work I buy some low fat ice cream.
I am a fitness walker and usually when I give in to the sweets, I walk extra miles.

I really struggle with motivation in the wintertime, too. I have a long commute to work, and when I get home in the dark, there’s nothing I want to do more than veg out on the couch with the cats! Also, at this time of year, the gym is absolutely packed, so that gives me even more excuses to avoid it!
In order to try to counteract this, I try to do some of my workout videos at home — especially on the weekends and to watch what I eat. I just know my real motivation will come back as the days get lighter and warmer. I just have to try not to have packed on too many pounds before then!
Yes, Lisanne624 – I have a cat, too and she just tempts me to snuggle.
I am a 50 yr old lady, working 0900-530pm. My daily commute is 1hr and 15mins, one way. It is difficult for me to sched excercise time before work, (not a morning person) and it is cold and dark when I get home, at this time of year. These gliders look like something I could motivate myself to do!
bettyw – A long daily commute would be so tough! Especially in the winter.
