The latest government recommendations on how much we should exercise may not cut it. New exercise guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) say we may need more physical activity to keep from gaining weight, and to help lose weight and keep it off. The ACSM stresses if you’re overweight or obese, you’ll most likely lose more weight and maintain that weight loss if you exercise at least 250 minutes each week – that’s 50 minutes five days a week.

Shoot. I’ve been trying for 200 minutes per week. With warmer weather approaching, maybe it will be easier to add some more minutes.
Yes cammy – the warmer weather always makes it easier to exercise more, doesn’t it???
I’m averaging about 40-45 minutes of cardio plus about 10 minutes of weight training and/or abs about five times a week. (I alternate different body areas each day on the weights, so I’m not doing a full circuit in one day. For example: biceps/triceps on Monday, back/chest Tuesday, etc.) Wondering if that 50 minutes the ACSM refers to needs to be all cardio, or if my weight training counts as part of it?
I’ve just recently started working out for about the amount of time they recommend. I am really starting to see a difference, too.
For Caroline, I am sure that weight training counts towards it. I think it includes all types of exercise.
Just call me skeptical, but I think these continual recommendations are useless other than giving some administrative committee a reason to justify their existence.
Caroline – It sounds like they are saying 50 minutes of just cardio…
Dawn – glad to hear you are starting to see a difference – that’s awesome!
Dr. J – They do seem to have new exercise guidelines quite often, don’t they?
