Here’s another problem with carrying too much weight around your middle – a new report finds it can hurt your lung function, making it harder to breathe.
Abdominal obesity is already linked with several health problems including birth defects, dementia, and the risk of dying early.

We have a retired doctor visit our company about twice a month – just to check in with everyone, see if there are any concerns, etc. Occasionally he’ll do a presentation to the whole company. About a year ago he did one on metabolic syndrome – and all the negative effects of abdominal fat. Very eye-opening. This about the lungs is one I haven’t heard. The one that jumped out at me from the presentation was the idea that if we’re healthier, and have less abdominal fat – this actually makes our dying easier. Easier in that we go quickly – instead of having this prolonged as body functions start to slowly fail because of how we’ve abused them.
Anyway, the more I hear (like this here today) the more I believe that exercise and eating healthy are two of the most important things I can be doing for myself.
Thanks for sharing this information – and spreading the word on the importance of our health.
I can attest to this, since I carried my extra weight mostly around my middle. Unfortunately, I have the “leftovers” to deal with, but I’m trying to compensate.
Lance – That is so awesome that you have a retired doctor visit your company – I am impressed! And yes, it seems the list of problems linked to abdominal fat keeps growing. Over just the past year, several studies have come out about this, and I’m sure there will be more.
I had the impression that it was a physical limitation from the excess fat.
