Just because a hospital gets labeled as a bariatric “center of excellence” doesn’t mean it has the best treatment out there. New research finds it could still have just as many deaths and complications from the weight-loss procedure as other hospitals. And researchers say the extra cost and effort hospitals have to go through to earn the designation might not be worth it.

First of all, the risks with doing surgery on massive people will always be significant. It’s the same as surgery on people with many other medical problems. The safest people to do surgery on, don’t need any surgery!
In my experience, within reason, it’s not the hospital where you find the excellence, it’s the individual surgeon.

As in anything, there are no guarantees, however a Center of Excellence is certainly a good place to start. Keep in mind that the surgery is only the beginning of this process and the follow up care is critical in the health and success of the patient.
