“You can try, but you can’t stop the Bhangra beat!” That’s how the website for The Masala Bhangra Workout describes its Indian dance-based fitness program. It’s also a super fun way to get your exercise! I first tried it a few years ago when I worked as a health reporter at KAKE-TV and featured it in a story about creative (and fun!) ways to exercise.
That’s when I got to chat with Sarina Jain, the founder of The Masala Bhangra Workout. We’ve been back in touch, just in time for her new DVD, Back 2 Bollywood. You’ll boogie to the infectious bhangra dhol beat as Sarina and her team of dancers lead you through an energetic workout featuring Indian music and dance moves to tone your muscles and burn calories.
Want to win a copy of Back 2 Bollywood (compliments of Sarina Jain)? Just head down to the comments and tell me what you do to mix up your cardio workouts. Me – I’ve gotta switch things up or I get bored – a little walking, some intervals, a few classes here and there, and some workout DVD’s in between.
A few contest details – it runs through midnight EST this Friday, July 24, you have to have a U.S. mailing address to enter… and we will use random.org to pick the winner.

Ok, I need this. I gotta get some new dance moves. I even try to dance sexy for my husband, but he asked me to “please, stop”.
Exercising with friends! Walking, kayaking, rock climbing… just getting together and being active.
I swim, walk, and go to yoga classes.
I mix it up too: walking, biking, hiking, resistance training, Nordic Track, fitness DVDs, running around at the park with my family and puppy! I loooove to dance too, so this would be an awesome addition to my routine!
Mixing it up is key- I also like having friends/workout buddies to keep me motivated. It’s great to have someone to say “keep going! you can do it!”
I need a new way to get in cardio! I am bored with walking and jogging – and it would be a great back-up for rainy days!
Yum Yucky – Tell your hubby that you are the bomb.
I use the elliptical on some days, the Wii Fit on others, and I do a lot of walking. I’ve been thinking of getting sme workout DVDs so winning this would be perfect!
I try not to do the same thing too many times in a row (although sometimes I do the treadmill for a few days). I do the treadmill at 15% grade/4 mph, next I’d do stairs/elliptical, then I’ll jog outside another day, or walk, or if I have to stay at home, I’ll ride the stationary bike. Basically, I try not to just keep doing the same thing day in and day out.
I usually run a mile before playing tennis and I try to do this daily. From time to time, I’ll attend cardio classes and swimming when the weather is nice is always in my schedule somewhere.
How do I mix up my cardio? Hmmm, I walk to the refrigerator and back to the chair, walk to the bathroom…ok, seriously. My favorite cardio is brisk walking, I vary this with a stair stepper, and a recumbant bike.
Thank you.
i try and run, swim and bike.
I walk for 1 hour 3 to 5 days a week and “dance” with my children, ages 2 and 4. I definitely need a new workout.
Ooooh! I love the Bollywood routines on So You Think you Can Dance! This would be cool!
At our house, activities revolve around my daughters, age 11 and 12. We walk, ride bikes, play frisbee, jump on the trampoline. This would be a great addition and expose us to a new activity that we haven’t had the opportunity to try yet.
I walk or I work out to a DVD.
I usually cycle and when I’m bored with that, I do the stair stepper. Thanks for the giveaway!
exercise bike and walking
I jog and do weight circuits.
I walk and use an exercise bike.
I try to walk then after a week or so Itry to switch to treadmill. I will even throw in pilates to break the monotony.
Katrina – I love doing the treadmill on an incline! It’s such a great workout, isn’t it?
LOL, Jaque!
TuttleDB – That’s awesome that you dance with your kids! Glad you get them moving.
I usually walk the treadmill or swim, but twice a week I take the Zumba class at my local gym. It’s a lot of hip hop, Latin, and a little belly dancing thrown in. I have never shaken my booty as much as I have in this class, and it’s a great work-out.
Elizabeth – Sounds like you already know the routine!
okobojiprincess – Your daughters sound like they enjoy being active – good for them!
rlr260 – Keep shaking that booty!!
I’m right there with you yumyuckie!! I need something really fun and new to get this 51 yr old body back into motion!! I have a glider thet I like to ‘glide’ to while watching tv.
I walk or I also have a few fitness DVD’s to vary it up. I’d love to try something new!
I like to walk and some swimming
I try to mix it up by walking some days and stair-stepping other days. Thanks for the giveaway!
I use different DVD’s and walk.
I’m sorry to say I don’t do much cardio. I do yoga sometimes and I’m trying to get back into fencing but that doesn’t really provide cardio other than when I run to warm up. I used to take Irish step dancing lessons. That was great exercise!
Sadly I don’t do any exercise, that’s why entering to win this DVD. I have to start getting in shape and leading a more healthy lifestyle, and this looks like a fun way to start getting back into shape.
I mainly use workout dvd’s. I get bored easily and need to change often. This would be a great new workout. Thanks.
I don’t work out often but if I could find a fun dvd to use that would be great. Thanks.
I alternate days with strength training
I like to take my workouts to nature for a good change. One of my favorite beach spots has a great hiking trail, or I grab my bike for a nice afternoon ride to the park with my Mom. For extra fun there is a disc golf course at our city park, it’s a good walk and good competitive fun!!
I try to mix it up by using the wii fit and getting outside
RussianBlondie – What is a glider?
Jennifer – Irish step dancing – that sounds like a lot of fun!
sunnyview99 – You’re welcome!
mkboldin – I’m glad you want to lead a more healthy lifestyle. I truly believe you have to enjoy your exercise of choice or you won’t stick to it, so I hope you find something that is fun for you!
Joy F – I get bored easily, too!
yaynay – I am so jealous of your “beach spots”!
sign me up
This really perked my interest because in the day I would dance for hours on end plus it will encourage the sexual side of me to come out of hiding. I walk along the mountain trail when the weathers nice and pull out my original ABs of Steel tapes every now and then. So as you can see I’m not consistent but very uncomfortable. My weight is where it reminds me its in the way, as if I have to wrestle with it. I don’t know if it is harder going through menopause, being on HP medicine, or just being depressed over job loss and empty nest syndrome. This dvd would help me feel like life is still living a lot longer instead of feeling this is as good as it gets!
Hiking with my dogs, a spin class and my Elliptical with some new music on the I-pod. I particularly love Bhangra music which I have on my playlist.
I walk and hike with my dogs, mountain bike with my husband and do step classes at the YMCA.
I’m like you, I get bored if I have to stay in the gym or stick with a routine. I love to mountain bike, swim, play tennis, hike and go dancing.
Walking, swimming, DVDs, sometimes use stationary bike
jerrischerris – I am so sorry for what you are going through. Please remember to take care of YOU during these tough times, okay?
I go swimming, treadmill, dvds.
I use the Wii Fit a lot but would like to try this! Thanks for the chance.

Looks fun
I like to do intervals on the treadmill, ride my bike, and rollerblade. Sometimes I get off the subway a stop early to walk the rest of the way to the office.
I want to get in shape and this would be lots of fun!!!
I get tons of DVDs and rotate them throughout the week. But, once a week, I take a walk in the park for something fresh!
Different music!
I have to change up my tunes or I get in a rut.
I switch between dvd’s and taking the baby for a jog in the stroller, or taking the dogs for a walk.
Besides doing regular cardio, treadmill, running, etc. I play basketball, soccer and tennis.
To mix up my cardio routine, I alternate between lifting a starbucks cup to my mouth and pushing the buttons on my remote. Ha! Just kidding. Now I do the treadmill at the gym on some days, on the other days I do the elliptical machine. Nothing to exciting. macd82 at gmail dot com
i don’t really mix up my routine, it’s really just bicycle or treadmill
I mix it up by sometimes walking, jogging or hiking on trails. Thanks for the opportunity!
I try and do different things- treadmill one day, playing at the park with the kids next.
I don’t do cardio – that’s why I really want to win this!
walk the dogs, do weights and yoga
I do light jogging/fast walking and stepping! I love watching bollywood on “So you can think you can dance.”
I run every morning for 15 min! I didn’t care at first but don’t mind it anymore!
I mix it up and keep it the same. I run everyday, but after I run I do different things to keep it new and exciting. I do Yoga DVDs, lift weights, and watch work-out videos online. Sometimes I’ll ride my bike to go to the park and swing on the swings, but that’s so much fun that it hardly counts as exercise
I have to mix it up a bit too. Some walking some DVDs.
I walk everyday
i have been really slacking on any workouts i need to get back in the groove
I do walking, swimming, and ride bikes! Sometimes I do video workouts or my gazelle if the weather’s nasty. Thanks.
I get bored easily too! I like to watch TV while on the treadmill, take breaks with weights, dance with my kids, and go on walks…
Hope I win…I love dancing to Bhangra!
I like to use different workout videos, walking, and light weights.
WALK AND FISH
I do walking, running, dancing, etc…
I alternate between the cycle, jogging, and playing tennis
I am the trainer for two friends, and I love to see their reactions when I bring them something new to try! We run, skip, jump rope, bounce on balance balls, etc.
I mix it up. I run, do cardiovascular exercise, do yoga and switch around .
LOL Amanda!
