Have you seen the video report we did here at FatFighterTV about all the hidden sugar in so many foods out there? You might be shocked at some of the places we found it! Now, the American Heart Association says most Americans are getting 22.2 teaspoons a day of added sugar and it’s time to cut way back.
The AHA’s report finds most of that extra sweet stuff comes from soft drinks and candy and adds up to 355 calories every day. Instead, the group recommends most women get no more than 100 calories a day from added sugar and most men limit their intake to 150 calories.
I’m pretty sure I could stand to cut back on sugar… although, I’ve been really watching it lately. Really.
How many calories from sugar do you get each day?

Hi Sahar,
So…I thought I was doing pretty good. I eat natural PB (no added anything except a little salt). And then I took a look at the yogurt I’ve been eating. Nearly 4 teaspoons of sugar per serving. Yikes! And sugar is something I try to watch! Makes me wonder if I’m doing a poor job of it? I’m thinking I could stand to cut back here too…
The yogurts get me every time. I justify it by telling myself that at least I’m getting *some* nutritional benefit from it. Beyond that, I’m getting pretty good at label scrutiny and if I opt for something sweeter, at least I know it’s there.
Hope you’re feeling better!
Lance – Yogurt is one of the biggies. It’s amazing how much added sugar is in other things you wouldn’t expect, too. I’ve switched to the Greek yogurts: http://fatfightertv.com/blog/2009/08/chobani-greek-yogurt-new-flavors-and-giveaway/
And I try to only get sugar from foods that are supposed to have it, like chocolate.
Cammy – Have you tried the Greek yogurts? So good and no artificial stuff in them!
Thanks for the well wishes – I am a little better now, in recovery mode. bleh
Been there, done this. It works! I’ve heard that Chromium Picolonate at a very low dose will decrease sugar cravings. I take it. I also combine the “pink and blue” stuff in a drink if I really need a sweet taste.
I have a horrible sweet tooth, so I try to be very conscious of the sugar I eat. I make my own flavored yogurt from plain no fat or Greek yogurt and add some fruit or agave nectar, which is lower than sugar on the glycemic index. Still, some days my inner Winnie the Pooh comes out and I feel the need to eat honey by the spoonful.
This Mama Cooks – honey by the spoonful? I am cracking up.
