I’m always on the lookout for new, healthy recipes so I don’t get bored with what I eat. It’s nice to have a meatless main meal in the mix, so last week, I enjoyed this Spicy Tofu Eggplant Stir Fry recipe from House Foods. This week, I’m going to make something with House Foods Tofu Shirataki. What’s that, you ask???
They’re noodles made from a blend of tofu and yam flour. They come in three shapes – spaghetti, fettucine, and angel-hair. You can use them instead of pasta in recipes and save a ton of calories and carbs. One serving of House Foods Shirataki has only 3 grams of carbs and 20 calories!
I tried them once before, and I gotta tell you, they have a fishy smell to them at first – you have to really rinse them to get rid of that. I’ve also heard that you can boil them in water with some soy sauce and a dash of sesame oil for a couple of minutes to get rid of the smell. As far as texture, they are chewy, but good. Personally, I think they are best used in Asian-style dishes.
Up for grabs this week, House Foods is giving away a delicious prize pack. One FatFighterTV member will get:
- an assortment of tofu
- an assortment of Shirataki Noodles
- House Foods Recipe Booklets
- Hungry Girl Cookbook (includes recipes using HF Shirataki Noodles)

Yay for having a US mailing address so I can enter! LOL!
I have been wanting to make a tofu omelette. I had it served to me once in a restaurant.
I looooooooooove tofu shiritaki noodles. I like them best as spaghetti. I pour on marinara sauce and veggie meatballs and wow, does it taste like the real thing!
These would be great for us because my daughter is diabetic (juvenile) and has to watch her carbs. I love frying tofu in a little canola oil, then mixing in stir-fried veggies, soy sauce, chinese five spice sauce and sesame oil. Yum!
Thank you!
Becky – a tofu omelette sounds interesting. Hmmm…
Nikki – Sounds like you really like them.
Tricia – I have never seen Chinese five spice sauce – is it easy to find?
I’ve heard good things about these noodles but haven’t had the courage to try them yet. Maybe now is the time?
Favorite tofu recipe…probably marinated in soy sauce and garlic and sauteed. It loses it’s tofu texture and picks up a lot of flavor that way.
I’ve had them at home in the freezer for months… I have no idea what to do with them. They seem too fragile to use as regular pasta. Any other good ideas on how I could eat them?
my favorite tofu recipe is tofu quiche. In a pan, I sautee 8oz sliced mushrooms with finely chopped onion, shallot and garlic and a little salt until browned. In a bowl I process (I use immersion blender, but you can use a food processor) a block of firm tofu with garlic powder, dried basil, parsley, black pepper, salt and a little lemon juice. To that I add shredded soy cheese, 1# squeezed dry chopped frozen spinach and the sauteed mushroom mix. I put that into a pie dish and top with sweet paprika. I bake it at 400 for 45 mins.
I just had shirataki noodles this past weekend. I rinsed them well and then microwaved them in water for 3 minutes. that seems to have gotten the smell out. Then I just had them with a little pasta sauce. I think they’d be great in a pad thai dish.
I’ve heard so much about shirataki noodles but have yet to try them. My favorite thing to do with tofu is to find the presweetened flavored kind and make them into popsicles for the kids. You’d never know it was tofu.
I’ve never cooked with tofu-would like to try.
The shirataki noodles looked like a dieter’s dream food. Good way to cut the calories when I want an alfredo sauce.
I think my favorite way to use tofu is stir fry with rice noodles, a little soy and mirin, ginger, garlic, green onion and bean sprouts and chopped peanuts. Whenever I make it for my son he usually does not leave any for me. I also have made the skiritaki noodles as a sesame noodle salad.
My husband makes something in the wok with Tofu, but it has no name, it’s leftovers all mixed up. Whatever it is, it’s good, and thank God he cooks! Thanks for the giveaway, you encourage to step out of my comfort zone and try strange foods!
cathy – I have yet to try marinating tofu, but I keep hearing how good it makes it. Must try it next time for sure!
esculon – Here is a link to some recipes: http://www.house-foods.com/Tofu/recipes.aspx
Let me know what you end up trying!
gervitsd – Your tofu quiche sounds really good! Thanks for sharing.
This Mama Cooks – Popsicles, huh? Sounds interesting. What do you add to the tofu?
geralynj – I just recently starting cooking with tofu. Before, I would order it when I ate out, but had never tried to cook with it. It’s nice to play around with different recipes!
Amykr – That sounds good! So does the sesame noodle salad….
I try to keep some of the tofu shirataki in the fridge- once you rinse it and dry it, pop in in the microwave for a minute and add veggies and garlic (so more of the italian style) but it is awesome. You get to have a pasta without having all of the calories. It’s great!
And- love omelettes with tofu
cdziuba – LOL about the no name “leftovers all mixed up” – I cannot cook without a recipe, but my husband is good at making stuff up, like yours.
I like marinating the tofu and baking it. But if I’m short on time a tofu scramble is super quick and easy.
I have had the fettucine noodles before and used the HG fettucine recipe. I was actually surprised how good it was. I added cut up chicken and it was a complete meal.
I’v been using tofu in pasta dishes for ages. I like the texture of the soft kind, but the firmer the tofu, the more nutrition. Just boil up enough pasta for however many servings you want, drain, add diced fresh tomatoes in season or canned diced tomatoes, fresh or frozen herbs, and diced tofu. Toss it all up, serve, and eat. Wonderful!
I would like to make something that my whole family would enjoy. AND not tell them until afterward that it was made with tofu. They are tofuphobic.
Hungry Girl has a fettucini alfredo that uses these noodles and it looks delicious!
I have never eaten Tofu where I liked it~ but I have been totally intrigued by these tofu noodles ever since seeing recipes from the Hungry Girl! My husband is diabetic and he has been having a hard time giving up pasta – this might help! I will take any help but I cant seem to find these noodles in any local store!
I have never eaten Tofu but I really want to try this product. I’ve tried the wheat pastas and just do not like them. I’ve heard that this is such a better option and taste better as well so i would really like to give it a try. I’m in the process of losing weight so I really am looking for healthier options and this sounds like one. I’ve lost 55lbs but still have a long ways to go.
I heard about this but never tried it. Would really love to try it!
My favorite tofu creation is Thai Tofu Lettuce Wraps – YUMMY!! I would LOVE to try the tofu noodles – as an RD, these would be great for some of my clients!!
I like tofu with Chinese veggies in a nice brown sauce. I also used to make mock egg salad with tofu, chopping it up and mixing it with celery & mayo and a little turmeric for color.
jen (@bwJen), if you can’t find the noodles locally, I know that Amazon sells them but that they require refrigerated shipping, so it probably costs a little more.
I love tofu. My favorite way of eating it is to make a sauce with a tbsp. teriyaki sauce, a tbsp orange marmalade, and a tsp honey. Cube tofu and toss into sauce. Stir fry veggies (any combination you like), when almost done add 1/4 cup of water, tofu mix, white pepper, garlic powder, cover and heat till tofu is hot and sause is bubbling. This is good on top of angle hair pasta or white rice. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Yummy.
Sara D. – Baking it, huh? Yet another option I have not tried!
Gwenelle – Thanks for the easy recipe! For me, the firmer the tofu, the better.
Lissa – tofuphobic – is that a word?
tobi1128 – it does look good!
jen – have you tried Whole Foods in the refrigerated section?
becknc88 – Congrats on the 55 pounds you lost – that’s fantastic! You’ll get to your goal. And yes, options like these can help make it easier to get there. You just gotta enjoy what you are eating, IMO.
wirlwindamy – Yum those lettuce wraps sound delish!!
herblady – thanks for the Amazon tip!
DeeAnn – wow, thanks for sharing your recipe! It sounds great… and easy. Perfect.
I saute garlic in some olive oil, add tofu, stir fry and then add some soy sauce. Serve over toast..
Tofuphobic is a word. We also have homeworkaphobics here too. Crazy isn’t it?
hands down General Tao’s Tofu! You can find the recipe on vegweb.. deeeelish!
I’ve only stir-fried with tofu, along with veggies
Lissa – homeworkphobics, too?? Wow, that IS crazy!
annalene – that DOES sound good! I will have to look it up.
my favorite tofu recipe is definitely tofu soup
prepared with tomatoes and soft tofu in vegetable broth in a slow cooker.
