Are you getting enough fruits and veggies? A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds only 14 percent of adults eat the recommended number of servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Only 14 percent! And take a look at how it varies from state to state:
Percentage of U.S. adults aged ≥ 18 years who had fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day, by state

Source: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2007
The report finds people in Washington, D.C. eat the most fruits and vegetables: 20.1 percent of adults meet the daily recommendations. Mississippi comes in last with just 8.8 percent.
Overall, the CDC says about 33 percent of adults get the recommended two or more servings of fruits a day and 27 percent have the recommended three or more servings of vegetables.
So, how did your state do? Are you green, orange, or yellow?
I was green (Washington), but now I’m orange (Ohio).

I am in an orange state, too.
Eating vegetables takes a conscious effort. I eat veggies with every one of my 6 meals a day. I add spinach or kale into protein shakes, blend pumpkin into yogurt or cottage cheese, blend extra veggies into pizza or pasta sauces.
With a little bit of thought getting the right mix can and should be done.
Florida’s green
I guess we ship our “orange” out of state!
I find it pretty easy to eat the recommendations, but when I see what other’s eat, I understand why they don’t make it.
Dr. J – I am cracking up about your shipping “orange” out of state. Nicely done.
I’m orange, baby! But I can still be independently green if I try hard enough.
Yum Yucky – Independently green – that’s what we should all strive for!
Orange (TN), living next door to yellow (MS). This is another of those surprising statistics to me, because in my own experience, veggies are served frequently in this area. Many aren’t prepared in any manner approaching healthy, but they’re still consumed regularly. Must just be within my subset of the population, or maybe I’m seeing it from a different viewpoint.
Cammy – Hmmm… I wonder if it is your subset?
