As we look for ways to cut costs in this tough economy, it seems more of us are ditching name brand foods for private labels. A new report from Nielsen Co. finds sales of store brand foods are up 18-22 percent for things like baby food, frozen pizza/snacks, and salad dressings. And here are 7 popular food and fitness products during this recession.

I buy store brands all the time. I’m loving that store brands are becoming healthier, too, and organic. I know the big brands are behind the store brand products so I’m not compromising taste or quality. And, it’s good for my budget, too!
I’ve found a few I really like, too – glad they are out there!
I am using what I have in my cupboard. With the cold weather that means cooking up beans, and finding new things to do with what I already have available!
Irene – I totally need to go through our pantry and find recipes to fit what we already have! I have a lot of grains and legumes that I keep forgetting about…
The economy is not the only factor in Store Brand product sale growth. At the same time as our economy struggles, retailers are becoming more proficient and expanding the number of items offered and the quality of the items. Many of the store brands now are at parity or sometimes higher quality than some of the national branded items.
