Don’t let the title deceive you – this is not a diet book. It’s actually an anti-diet book. And since I don’t believe in diets, it caught my attention.
Author, Mimi Spencer is a fashion and beauty journalist who wrote 101 Things to Do Before You Diet after she got tired of years of dieting and depriving herself.
In the book, Spencer shares the tips, tricks, and solutions that finally helped her drop some pounds. Yes, it’s about losing weight, but in a healthy way, both physically and mentally. It includes different ways to eat, cheat, and dress (including undergarments) to look and feel your best. This quote from the book says it all: “The first step is to start loving the skin you’re in. Understand this, and you’re on your way to figuring it all out.”
The book is filled with useful tips. Plus, I found it quite entertaining, which is always a bonus.
To kick off the New Year and your weight loss resolutions, enter for a chance to win a free copy of 101 Things to Do Before You Diet. Here’s how – just share a healthy tip or two that you use to help you lose or maintain your weight… or tell me what clothes/undergarments make you look and feel great.
Spanx, anyone?
Me – I’ve been really into all natural nut butters lately – just a little bit on a sliced banana satisfies my sweet tooth enough that I don’t crave sugar. Seriously.
Happy New Year, everyone! See you in the comments!
Contest runs through midnight EST this Friday, January 8, you have to have a U.S. mailing address to enter, and we will use random.org to pick the winner.

I go to spin class 3x a week and I know that watching my food portions really has helped in the past so I need to get back to that because this year was a major struggle and I gained back a lot of what I lost. Gotta look ahead and stay positive!
A new year is always a good time to move forward!
Great title! Consistency in healthy behaviors is, in my opinion, key!
Welcome back, Sahar!!
Sounds like a wonderful book!
Okay, I am determined that this is THE YEAR I lose my extra weight. For so many reasons. how do I enter to win?
Any clothes that cover up my twin skin make me feel great LOL.
I am hooked on Kettlebells…a true total body shape up workout! And youd be surprised the cardio workout you get in and the endurance you build up through them!
kettlebells rock – love them!
We both lost weight last year and have maintained it for several months. However, we would like to lose more and think this book might have some ideas I have not thought about.
I have a great little snack I make when I am craving something sweet. I take a large date and make a cut in it. I put in a tsp of cream cheese and top it with a walnut half. This taste so good and is good for you. I can’t remember calorie count but it is not much. I usually make up a few and keep them in the fridge. Of course, I cover them so I do see them when I open the fridge every time.
I am more into getting healthy this year and I firmly believe that the weight I have to lose will come off if I just eat right. So, this would be a good book to read right now.
I don’t do anything special. Since my heart “episode” 3 years ago, I do a LOT of walking with my dogs, I cut firewood and, in general, work around the house. I have a bowl of oatmeal, a glass of tomato juice (low sodium), some fruit, a handful of raisins or cranberries, and a granola bar in the morning along with my coffee. Eat small meals the rest of the day and nothing about an hour before bedtime. Seems to work for me.
I go to the gym as often as I can. My goal is cardio 5x week, and weights 2-3x week. It seems like I can lose inches even if I don’t necessarily lose pounds. The increased activity makes me feel better and stronger, and I think I look better in my clothes.
My tip? WATER! WATER! WATER! It changes your body comp, helps with appetite, and makes makes your skin glow!
Joanna – I am a big fan of water, water, water!
I go to the gym, I love the way I feel after a good cardio workout. It helps me not want to waste the effort on junk food.
I drink three glasses of water before each meal.
I agree water water water!!!! And at least some type of exercise any 3-5 days a week.
I agree water water water!!!! And at least some type of exercise any 3-5 days a week.
My healthy tip is to park farther away to make yourself walk just a little extra each day!
In order to encourage myself to drink more water, I bought a stainless steel water bottle with a pop up straw feature. The stainless steel keeps the water really cold, which I like, and it’s easy to sip thru the straw even when driving. Happy New Year!
No processed sugar!

Something to help lose/watch weight. Keep yourself busy. Boredom can lead to snacking. Anyway this book sounds great. Would love a chance at winning.
I have found that I look slimmer when I wear shirts that are made with a polyester blend that makes them feel “slinky” and they don’t stick to me and show all of my rolls(lol). Thanks for the great giveaway!

I bike and use the kettlebell for strength. Also, I try to stay away from lots of sugar, buying sugar free whenever possible.
I weigh myself often, that way I know if I have gained a few pounds and need to kick it up a bit.
Try to exercise 3 times a week and drink lots of water.
i drink plenty of water and eat balanced meals to maintain my weight.
I try to do my exercising early in the morning – the earlier the better! That way I feel good all day about having done it, and I don’t have to struggle to find time to do it later. Granted, getting up at 4 a.m. to go to the gym isn’t always fun, but it works! I even lost weight over the holidays!
Melissa – I am so impressed that you LOST weight over the holidays! That’s quite a feat.
Just start eating healthy foods, chicken fish, vegies, fruit, whole grains.
I use workout dvds, esp. ones of walking. Easier to do, and I lost 60 pounds one year using them!
i think we all know what to do, it’s just a matter of getting it done. i try to stay motivated by offering myself rewards for the good job done!

I am struggling with a diet and sometimes I have fallen by the wayside but I have lost 44 pounds and this encouages me.
To keep myself on track, I try to reward myself.

Spanx are the best undergarments for slimming I need to go buy a black pair for an upcoming wedding I am attending.
I have started to track everything I eat – It really keeps me in check!
I belong to a gym. I do strength training 2 or 3 times a week and cardio 5 times a week. I also log my food at least 5 days a week and try to get in 100 oz of water a day.
I love filling my plate with steamed veggies covered in dashes of creole seasoning. Fills me up and is healthy to boot!
Also, lifesavers makes some pretty great sugar free candies in caramel and butterscotch flavors. They are great for those times when you need something divine!
I have lost 50 lbs last year and this year is going swimmingly!
Can you tell I’m proud?!
My tip would be to buy an item in a smaller, goal size that you’d like to someday reach (even one size down helps!). Every month or so, try the item on and see how close you are to your goal! So far, my new smaller jeans have gradually moved up from calves to hips to almost zipped up!
Carmela – Congrats on the weight loss! You should totally be proud.
