This post was just going to be a little News Nugget to let you know that PepsiCo, the maker of brands like Doritos and Pepsi, announced it wants to triple its sales of healthier products in the next decade. But as I kept reading about some of the plans the company has to make its products “healthier,” it kind of creeped me out.
I like that PepsiCo’s plans include cutting the sodium, sugar, and saturated fat in its products. But then I saw that science may come into play. This is the line that got to me – “PepsiCo is investing in science to improve nutrition, including developing a new salt and more lower-calorie or zero-calorie sweeteners.”
Apparently, the new salt dissolves more quickly in your mouth so you don’t have to eat as much to get the same effect. Personally, I would rather just cut back on salt than eat something made with this lab-ified new salt. But that’s just me.
I’m not picking on PepsiCo. I understand it and other food and beverage companies want to make money and keep up with the trend toward healthier foods. But do we really need to invent a new salt? And concoct more lower-calorie or zero-calorie sweeteners?
Potato chips of the future in the making? The concept leaves a bad taste in my mouth. What about you?

I am with Joanna & you!
Sounds like a chemistry experiment to me! Yikes!
I think I will just use what God created and not man in the lab…moving more and more towards whole foods anyway.
Trish – It’s definitely the way to go!
Hmmm, this does not sound good. It’s a good thing I don’t eat those snacky things anymore. Well, not much of them anyway.
BOO!!! Thumbs way down to man-made sweeteners and such. That’s just another form of UNhealthy products. What we need is for these companies to use REAL FOOD ingredients. Sighs. When will they learn?
Sagan – I wonder what would happen if everyone just ate whole foods?
Why stop with just a new salt? I’m betting they’ll create synthetic potatoes to make chips out of! With built in excitotoxins of course
Aaron – synthetic potatoes – ewww!
Reminds me of the artificial fat (Ollestra, or some such name)that turned out to make a lot of people sick. I agree with Trish & Sagan. As to what would happen if we all ate whole foods–the companies would go broke, and then maybe they’d learn. But I doubt it.
Mumcat – Ah yes, Olestra. That stuff was so disgusting, wasn’t it?
