Despite some companies cutting back on salt in their foods, a new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says it is not enough. The IOM is urging the government to gradually reduce salt in foods to a level that would have Americans cutting back, on average, by about half a teaspoon.
Right now, we eat about 1½ teaspoons of salt every day. That’s more than double what we need, and high enough to increase the risk of health problems like high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. Most of that sodium is hidden in processed foods and restaurant meals.

Whenever I read the sodium content of many, many foods I am really surprised! Ever since I un- addicted myself to that stuff, it has a very bitter taste I had never noticed before.
Fortunately, I’ve never been much of a sodium/salt fan. I am always shocked at the sodium content in packaged foods – it’s out of control!
I’m eating Peach Chobani while reading this post. It has 80mg of sodium. I wonder why yogurt needs sodium in it?
I’m pretty calm on my sodium inhalation until you put a plate of mashed potatoes in front of me. Extra salt & butter is what I need. Sorry.
You salt your mashed potatoes?
