Do you toss out food after the “use by” date… or take a chance and eat it anyway? A new survey from ShelfLifeAdvice.com finds Americans unnecessarily throw out billions of dollars of food a year because they are worried it will make them sick. I’m definitely guilty of this!
The survey shows three-fourths of Americans think certain refrigerated foods are not safe to eat after the date on the package has passed. But experts say if the foods are stored properly, most of them can be safe after the “use by” date.
The people who took the survey were most worried about these five products – milk, cottage cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, and eggs.
Here’s how long ShelfLifeAdvice.com says these foods are safe:
Milk – if it is properly refrigerated, it will be safe, nutritious, and tasty for about a week after the “sell-by” date and will probably be safe to drink longer than that.
Cottage cheese – should last 10-14 days after the date on the carton (or 10-14 days after opening if this period ends before the printed date).
Mayonnaise – if it’s unopened and refrigerated, it can be kept for 30 days after its expiration date or 3-4 months after opening.
Yogurt – will be good 7-10 days after its “sell-by” date.
Eggs - if they’re properly refrigerated, they should last at least 3-5 weeks after the “sell-by” date.
And if you’re wondering about the shelf life of just about any kind of food, you’ll probably find the answer at ShelfLifeAdvice.com.
I feel like such a food waster after reading this because I always toss stuff out by the “use by” date. You?

GOOD TO KNOW!!!
I use a very scientific method to determine if food is still good, it’s called the sniff test (blush). If it’s something like an egg, I usually only go a few days after the born on date and then I put it out of its misery.
Love your scientific method!
This is an ongoing problem for me. I am always unsure if food in my fridge is still good. My solution is to only buy what I need, but then I end up spending more since I go to the grocery more. I’m really glad I found this post and thank you for sharing that site. I feel a bit sick knowing I’ve eaten eggs past its ‘shelf life date.’ =/
You’re welcome! I think that site has so much great info. And thanks for stopping by!
Interesting how with my not eating dairy (cow) or eggs (chicken) this is a non-issue
Well, there you have it then.
This is info I need! Thank you!
I learned about the eggs a while back, but before that, I probably wasted quite a few because the carton date was past.
I’m a total waster.
I’m so paranoid about getting sick…
Thx for this site! Very cool! I am like Joannna, I sniff & smell but I like this to help too!
Sniffing rotten food is gross.
I know many food producers place an earlier “best by” or expiration date an lots of foods.
With three kids, 2 being teenage boys, there’s not much chance of food hanging around my house long enough to expire.
Yep, sounds like you will never have expired food around the house.
Passing this along to the wife.
She’s the one that gets nervous.
She sounds like me!
