What happens when appetizers at America’s top sports bar chains face off calorie to calorie… and fat gram to fat gram? FatFighterTV digs in to see which game day grub scores the most unhealthy penalties.
First up – the calorie champ:

What happens when appetizers at America’s top sports bar chains face off calorie to calorie… and fat gram to fat gram? FatFighterTV digs in to see which game day grub scores the most unhealthy penalties.

First up – the calorie champ:

1. Champps Americana: Champps’ Mile High Nachos w/Chicken scored 3600 calories and 224 grams of fat – Even I’m guilty of indulging in these, and I only shared them with one other person. I didn’t know they had as many calories as seven Quarter Pounders with Cheese. Yikes! Next time, I’ll invite more people!

FatFighterTV asked a Champps Americana spokesperson to comment on the Nachos’ first place ranking. “Our Nachos are an ideal item to share with 6-7 friends (easily),” says Rachel Phillips-Luther, Vice President- Marketing. “When you consider sharing that item with several friends, the calorie content per person is much more reasonable.”

*Second and third place high calorie honors both go to wings at The Greene Turtle:

2. The Greene Turtle: Smoky BBQ Boneless Wings – 25 of ‘em with Bleu Cheese dressing have 3180 calories and 199 grams of fat. They may be boneless, but they’re still fried, and it shows in the huge amount of fat and calories.

3. The Greene Turtle: Smoky BBQ Chicken Wings – 25 wings with Bleu Cheese dressing have 2984 calories and 211 fat grams – as much fat as what you get in seven Big Macs. Seriously.

4. Buffalo Wild Wings: Parmesan Garlic Boneless Wings – 24 with Bleu Cheese dressing have 2872 calories and 222 grams of fat. Watch out if you’re winging it bone-free. The boneless wings rack up more calories than the traditional ones at both The Greene Turtle and BW3.

5. The Greene Turtle: Southern Chicken Sliders with Crab Imperial – Get the Double Play (2 four-packs) and you’ll get 2730 calories and 98 grams of fat. Eat too many of these fried chicken sliders and you may not be able to slide into your jeans!

6. Buffalo Wild Wings: Parmesan Garlic Wings – 24 with Bleu Cheese dressing add up to 2488 calories and 198 grams of fat. What? Wings made it on this list again???!

7. Ram Restaurant & Brewery: Ram Favorites Platter – 2464 calories, 48 grams of saturated fat. Potato Skins, Mozzarella Sticks, Mini Cheese Quesadilla, Calamari and Buffalo Tenders with a variety of sauces. Even if you share this sampler with a friend, you’re still getting a day and a half’s worth of saturated fat, based on recommendations from the American Heart Association.

8. Champps’ Sampler Platter – 2072 calories, 121 grams of fat. Mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, potato skins and Buffalo wings served with a variety of sauces. As fried as it gets.

9. Ram Restaurant & Brewery: BBQ Chicken Quesadilla – 2066 calories, 54 grams of saturated fat. You’d have to run at a pace of six MPH for two hours just to burn off the calories from this mega meal. (based on someone who weighs 140 pounds)

10. Fox and Hound Pub & Grille: Grand Champion Wings/Hot Sauce - 1960 calories, 164 grams of fat – What’s up with all the wings on this list? Someone cry fowl!

Doing this research got me thinking – Why is it that we like to eat this kind of food when we watch sports, anyway? And while it’s nice to share appetizers, knowing that you’re going to share can make it more tempting to order more than one. Think of all the fat and calories you’re adding when you do that.

Oh, and while we were at it, FatFighterTV also compiled a list of the 10 Football Not-As-Fatties – appetizers with the fewest calories from the same sports bar chains, just in case you would rather order the lesser evils.

*Calories for an order of 25 boneless wings with bleu cheese dressing at The Greene Turtle range from 2649-3180, depending on the sauce. For the traditional wings, they range from 2452-2984.

Information Unknown
FatFighterTV contacted two other top sports bars. Damon’s Grill told us its nutrition information was not yet available but “please know we have placed this on our marketing plan as a high priority for our current fiscal year.”

Not Playing Ball
ESPN Zone said, “Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with accurate nutritional information about our menu items. Much of that information depends on the condiments that we liberally add, along with the accompaniments that guests select.” Hmmm… the other sports bars use condiments and they didn’t have a problem coming up with the information.

How we did it
FatFighterTV determined the top sports bar chains based on information from Restaurants & Institutions’ 2009 Casual Dining rankings based on food and beverage sales. The nutrition information for both The Greene Turtle and Champps Americana was available online at each restaurant’s website. We contacted the other three sports bars as an average customer to see how quickly we could get the information. All of them – Fox and Hound Pub & Grille, Ram Restaurant & Brewery, and Buffalo Wild Wings – responded promptly. This report is based only on information available at the time of publication. Menus may vary by location.

(Me, a LONG time ago! Wow, look at the size of that cell phone!)

[Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Propel® for the You.Propelled Program]

Before I was a Health Reporter, my first job in TV News was as a one-man-band General Assignment Reporter. I had to carry a heavy camera and tripod and shoot my own stories. I also had to shoot video of myself on camera, edit the video, and report the news of the day. I despised carrying all that gear, especially in the dead of winter… or the hottest days of summer! But I truly loved TV News and knew I wouldn’t have to keep lugging that stuff around forever. So, I learned to focus on my passion – journalism, specifically health reporting. It really helped me get through the early years of my career.

Have you ever had to learn to love your work? Here are a few tips from an article at You.Propelled that can help you find passion in your job, or other areas of your life:

1) Take a notebook with you at all times.

2) Systematically note down things that are pretty darn good about your job. Things you enjoy. Things you are grateful for. Co-workers you like.

3) Take one thing from this list that is important to you and significant to the company. Come up with a simple one month project where you will be increasing that component in your daily life. Example, if you work with a few pleasant customers, then the project could be: How to get more customers like that? Or, How to get our current customers to be like that? Or, How to get more work with those pleasant customers?

You can find more tips on How to Find Passion in Your Job over here.

(With photojournalist, Tim Pearson, after shooting a surgery story a few years ago…)

When I moved up to a bigger market and had a photographer to shoot and edit video for me, I was excited to be able to focus just on the ins and outs of my passion – health reporting. It gave me the opportunity to grow as a journalist. But I was also glad, strange as it may seem, to have done it all myself in the past. I believe it enhanced my career by making me more grateful.

What about you? How have you enhanced your life? There’s a new community waiting to hear your thoughts and inspire you to get where you want to be. And you could win some cash while you’re at it, so check it out! Chime in every day at You.Propelled on DivineCaroline for a chance to win $5,000 to pursue your dream. The more friends you bring, the better your chances of winning.

Here’s what the film’s producer, Amy Kalafa, tells FFTV about the movie, her anger, and how you can join the fight for kids’ health.

What made Amy angry
“I was angry that my efforts were being undermined by what was being served in the school cafeteria. And when I met other moms who felt the same way, they were called ‘Food Police’ and ‘Nutrition Nazis’ rather than being welcomed with open arms, saying, ‘How do we do this?’ That is still going on now. If you try to feed kids better, you get labeled as a spoiled sport.”

Why she’s concerned
“There’s a childhood obesity crisis in this country. For the first time, kids will live shorter lives than their parents. And obesity is the tip of the iceberg. Maybe what’s great in a sort of weird, twisted way is that we can see it, because then we actually notice it and want to do something about it.”

Too much blame on parents?
“Parents are getting blamed for all the bad eating habits of kids and yet, they’re like the second or third generation that’s grown up in this food culture, so they don’t know any better.

It’s not that there’s too much blame put on parents; it’s that there aren’t enough tools for parents to make changes and there’s not enough support for parents. There are parents who don’t care and parents who do care. It shouldn’t be entirely up to the parents. The schools shouldn’t be complicit in doing harm to kids. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.”

What to do?
“I thought, somehow this information needs to be packaged so that parents can understand it and be able to make wise choices for their kids. I decided somebody should make a movie and that somebody should be me. I focused on school food just because I could reach the most people the most efficiently.

I see parents as advocates for their kids. If they go to the school and say, ‘We’re not happy with what you’re feeding them,’ that’s how they can create change.”

See a preview of Two Angry Moms

Familiar frustration
“When I started making the film I thought, I’ll just go find a mom like me who knows how to fix this, because I didn’t. I started interviewing moms who had tried to make a change in communities near mine and they all started telling me the same story - ‘I signed up for my school food committee, I volunteered my time, I went to meetings, I offered suggestions. We all felt like something was going to happen, and at the end of the year, everything stayed the same. We all dropped off the committee and decided it was a waste of time. And what do we do now?’”

The other angry mom
“That’s what started getting me angry. I thought there’s got to be somebody who knows how to do this. Then I was introduced to Dr. Susan Rubin. She just happened to be the one tenacious mom who had been fighting that fight for ten years in her community and still had gotten nowhere. But she kept at it and her organization was starting to have an impact. So I followed her and Better School Food over the course of a school year and step by step saw how they were able to help one school district implement change. They went really far. The film kind of models that transformation and the conflict in the community and the misunderstanding, and then eventually – the success.”

Uphill battle

“I’m a parent who does the right job at home and my kids will still eat all the junk that’s being sold in the school. I went to the school thinking, I’m just going to show how the system works, and there I go finding my daughter is eating Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats. Yeah, if you offer it to her, she’ll eat it. It’s kind of like saying, ‘Maybe they should have a cigarette machine in the high school cafeteria because at age 16 it’s legal to smoke.’”

Change is possible
“What the film tries to show is that schools can actually be part of the solution. And instead of going around showing what was wrong, I made a movie that showed the schools that were doing a really great job and the parents who were advocating so that their schools would make those changes.

When I started doing the film I was looking for models and there weren’t a lot. It was really hard to find good programs. In the wake of the film, there have been many success stories.”

Not a Nutrition Nazi
“I love pizza. I love sweets. My kids do, too. The schools, at the bare minimum, should not offer foods that we know promote obesity and not offer foods that are laden with chemicals and preservatives. You want to serve pizza? How about serving pizza made with fresh, healthy ingredients?”

See the movie, join the movement
“I’m encouraging people to sign up to host a screening. If you watch it in a community group – even if it’s a small group like a house party of 10-12 people – you’re going to gather the neighbors together, you’re going to have a great conversation afterward, and you’re going to say, ‘What can we do as the next step?’”

###

In the past nine months, there have been about 60 movie screenings across the country. Monday night, we got weighed, measured, and timed to see how our fitness compares to when we first started the FitWit Boot Camp. Overall, I’m pleased with my results.

I gained a couple of pounds, which was expected, since we’ve been building muscle… but unfortunately, my body fat stayed the same. I blame it on my splurge on sweets in San Francisco last week. (Or was it all those Dove ice cream bars last month???) Seriously, though, my diet could use a little tweaking. But I got lots of good news. I lost an inch in my hips and two inches in my waist. Fitness-wise (most important, IMO), my one-mile run time improved by more than two minutes – yay! And I can now do 34 pushups in one minute compared to 26 when I started; 36 situps instead of 30; and 45 squats instead of 27. Sweet.

This is Joel, a personal trainer and one of our camp leaders. He set some new goals for me as we get started with our second six-week camp. Yes, my husband and I are back for round two!

Oh, and something cool I’ve been meaning to tell you about this program – as you’re getting in shape, you’re also giving back to the community. Some of the money for the classes goes to The FitWit Foundation, a non-profit group that offers free fitness, tutoring and summer camp programs for low-income young people in our neighborhoods. So you can really feel good about your workouts. Now, if I could just do something about that sweet tooth…

That’s the second thing I thought after my first Boot Camp workout (I was out of breath after just the warm up). The first thing I thought was, Are you friggin’ kidding me??! You want me to do what???!!! Sure I’ll do 100 pushups and 100 burpees. No problem. Yep, go ahead and time me, too.

I used to be in great shape – climbing stairs at stadiums, going rock climbing in the mountains, and lifting all kinds of weights. Best of all, I had a strong core which helped me better cope with a back injury. Now my back is weak and uhhh… so am I.

Wow. How could I let this happen? It seems to have crept up on me over the past three years. In that time, I’ve moved across the country twice – from Kansas to Washington State to Ohio. And it was hard to get back into a challenging workout routine like I used to have for so long. Oh, and I got hitched. That’s gotta have something to do with it, right? That’s why both my husband and I are in this boot camp thing together.

It’s not that I ever stopped exercising – I just stopped pushing myself. But FitWit Boot Camp is all about pushing yourself, which is just what I need. Classes have everything from exercises with medicine balls, kettle bells and body bars to running, jumping, and crawling… to sit ups, push ups, and squats. There are 24 workouts in all – one hour each, four times a week, for six weeks.

Here in Columbus, we have FitWit personal trainers Chad Welday and Joel Baker to crack the whip guide us.

“We try to make our classes difficult enough to challenge and beat even the most fit individuals,” explains Welday. “However, we have designed this program to teach to any fitness level. In our current class we have individuals training to run in the Chicago Marathon as well as campers who are as much as fifty pounds over weight. Most anyone can excel in our camps regardless of what their individual starting point is as long as they are willing to work hard.”

And the changes campers should see – if we give it our all – include increased strength, body fat loss, improved flexibility, increased metabolism, toned muscles, increased energy, less aches and pains, and increased motivation. Nice!

The cool thing is every class is something different, so you never know what to expect… except of course that you’ll get your booty kicked in an intense workout. I wear a heart rate monitor to every class and I’ve been burning about 600 calories each workout. Not bad, eh?

And in the end, what do our fearless leaders want for us campers?

“More than anything else we would like our campers to feel a sense of accomplishment,” says Welday. “We expect our members to leave our six week program more confident, more motivated, more committed, and most importantly healthier.”

We’re just starting week 3 now. I will have more posts (and videos!) as the boot camp continues and of course, let you all know how much I improved when it’s all over.

Anyone else out there gone through a boot camp? Anyone else had a change in your life get you off-track of your workout routine? Do share!

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Tim Russert’s death since I heard about it and frankly, I still can’t believe it happened. Russert was the moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press” as well as political analyst for the network. He died Friday from sudden cardiac arrest while he was at work – he was 58. His funeral is today and it got me thinking about why his death has affected me so greatly. I never met him; I don’t really even like politics. But he definitely touched my life.

As a TV news journalist… I looked up to him and respected him immensely. Even though I don’t care much for politics, I always tuned in to hear whatever he had to say. I think it was because his passion was obvious. You could just see it on his face. That in and of itself made me hang on to every word. Russert was always beyond informed, tough, but always fair. He was one of the few true journalists left in the TV news world and it’s so sad to see another one go.

As a health reporter… I wanted to know more about his health and death right away: Had he had heart problems before? Was he on medication? Did they use a defibrillator? Now we have answers to those questions.

Yes, he had coronary artery disease. Yes, he was on medication and he also exercised to control it. And Dr. Michael Newman (Russert’s personal physician) tells CNN’s Larry King that resuscitation attempts began right after he collapsed:

“NBC had a defibrillator. A resuscitation was begun almost immediately. NBC had an EAD [external automated defibrillator] on site, and they were preparing to use it. At the same moment, the DC EMS, emergency medical squad, arrived, and they immediately defibrillated Tim. He had no heart rhythm. They defibrillated him. His heart was beating then in a ventricular — fine ventricular fib, and then it deteriorated. They shocked him again. Actually, he was defibrillated three times before his arrival at Sibley Memorial Hospital.”

According to the American Heart Association, 310,000 people die every year of coronary heart disease – most of them from sudden cardiac arrest. And from what I’ve been reading in the last few days, many people now want to know their risk of heart disease and sudden cardiac arrest. You can find out much more at the American Heart Association’s website.

Russert wasn’t the picture of health – he carried weight around his belly, a known risk factor for heart disease, but he was doing something about it. Maybe his death will make more people do more to reduce that dangerous abdominal fat.

As someone who has experienced loss… I know the “What ifs” can make you crazy and that there can be so many of them. It’s hard to accept that it was just his time to go, but what other choice do we have? My heart goes out to his family. Goodbye, Tim Russert – you will be sorely missed.

A few months ago, FatFighterTV featured a video of fitness model, Jamie Eason’s plyometrics card routine - a workout she uses when she travels and doesn’t have access to a gym, or when she wants to mix up her regular exercise routine. Jamie also wrote out her plyo workout for FFTV to share with those who would rather read than watch how to do it. With summer travel here, I thought this would be a good time to share it with you. It’s a tough workout, but you can pretty much do it anywhere your summer vacations take you.

Jamie Eason’s Plyo Card Routine

Perform 2 sets of the following exercises all in a row. Use a deck of cards, with the jokers still in the deck, and flip 3 each time. Add up the cards (face cards are ten and aces and jokers are either one or eleven, depending on how fit you are). Perform that many reps and then flip three more. Rest for 2 – 3 minutes between sets. A set is complete after all exercises have been performed in a row.

(15) jump squats

(15) jumping jacks

(15) alternating jump lunges

(15) high knees

(15) mountain climbers

(15) running butt kicks

(15) wide push ups

(15) jumping jacks

(15) bicycle crunches

(Note: the “15” next to the exercises is if you don’t have cards).

###

They’ve been known to get dangerously skinny at all costs. Now celebrities are popping… even crushing and snorting Adderall to lose weight, according to a recent article in the New York Daily News. How dangerous is this latest trend? Enough to kill you.

“Quite simply, it continues to promote the message that dying by die-ting is worth the risk,” eating disorders expert, Beth Hartman McGilley, Ph.D., FAED, tells FatFighterTV.

With so many kids and teens already taking Adderall to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the drug is already out there. And when young girls see their celebrity role models using it to get thin, well… they think it’s okay to do the same. And that’s what makes this trend so very dangerous.

“Youth buy into a childlike belief system that they won’t be misled by those they respect, naively presuming those mentors are operating conscientiously, with regard to their ‘fans’ and with an informed perspective. They’re NOT!” says McGilley. “Stars are doing whatever they can to succeed in an industry that is corrupt and relentless in its demands for physical perfection.”

I agree. And when I did a little digging on the dangers of Adderall – which is the combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine – I quickly found this warning from MedlinePlus: “The combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine may cause sudden death or serious heart problems, especially if the medication is misused.” Yes, death. Hellooo???!!!

It’s also addictive and can lead to eating disorders. And if that’s not enough, check out this long list of other possible side effects, which can be quite serious:

• fast or pounding heartbeat
• shortness of breath
• chest pain
• excessive tiredness
• slow or difficult speech
• dizziness or faintness
• weakness or numbness of an arm or leg
• seizures
• mood changes
• motor tics or verbal tics
• psychosis (loss of contact with reality)
• hallucinating (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
• mania (frenzied or abnormally excited mood)
• aggressive or hostile behavior
• changes in vision or blurred vision
• fever
• blisters or rash
• hives
• itching
• swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, or throat
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
• hoarseness

And the less severe symptoms Adderall can cause are pretty awful, too. They include:

• nervousness
• restlessness
• difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
• uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
• headache
• changes in sex drive or ability
• dry mouth
• stomach pain
• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• constipation

Why would you CHOOSE to do that to your health? Seriously, don’t mess with this stuff.
