Mmmm… almond butter! I love the stuff. I actually only tried it for the first time a few months ago, but I was instantly hooked, probably because almonds are my favorite nut. Then I heard about Barney Butter – an all-natural, no-stir almond butter. What? You don’t have to stir the oil? Genius! And as I soon found out – tasty, too!

Barney Butter is good stuff. It’s named after it’s creator, Jennifer Barney, who sent me some samples to try. So far, I’ve been enjoying the Smooth variety on protein pancakes, in smoothies, and by the occasional spoonful straight from the jar.

Before I was a Health Reporter, my first job in TV News was as a one-man-band General Assignment Reporter. I had to carry a heavy camera and tripod and shoot my own stories. I also had to shoot video of myself on camera, edit the video, and report the news of the day. I despised carrying all that gear, especially in the dead of winter… or the hottest days of summer! But I truly loved TV News and knew I wouldn’t have to keep lugging that stuff around forever. So, I learned to focus on my passion – journalism, specifically health reporting. It really helped me get through the early years of my career.

Have you ever had to learn to love your work? Here are a few tips from an article at You.Propelled that can help you find passion in your job, or other areas of your life:

1) Take a notebook with you at all times.

2) Systematically note down things that are pretty darn good about your job. Things you enjoy. Things you are grateful for. Co-workers you like.

3) Take one thing from this list that is important to you and significant to the company. Come up with a simple one month project where you will be increasing that component in your daily life. Example, if you work with a few pleasant customers, then the project could be: How to get more customers like that? Or, How to get our current customers to be like that? Or, How to get more work with those pleasant customers?

When I moved up to a bigger market and had a photographer to shoot and edit video for me, I was excited to be able to focus just on the ins and outs of my passion – health reporting. It gave me the opportunity to grow as a journalist. But I was also glad, strange as it may seem, to have done it all myself in the past. I believe it enhanced my career by making me more grateful.

If I wasn’t in good enough shape to be able to hike and explore places like the one in this picture – Silver Creek Falls, Oregon – I don’t know what I would do. My vacation earlier this month to the Pacific Northwest reminded me why I choose to live a healthy lifestyle. Of course, it’s not always easy. It’s a constant effort – you have to keep exercising and eating a healthy diet. Forever. So what motivates me to do this?

Yep. I’ve got a thing for chocolate!

But besides that little obsession, my biggest motivator to try to be healthy is my genes. Heart disease runs in my family and I want to do what I can to avoid it. Both my parents had high blood pressure. My father has had a heart attack. My mom died of a stroke. I may not be able to control my family history, but I can control my lifestyle.

Another motivator comes from all the years I spent as a TV News Health Reporter. After covering so many health issues for 15 years and interviewing hundreds of doctors and patients, I learned that your odds of preventing serious illnesses are better if you take care of your health.  Of course, there’s still a chance you could get very sick. But if that happens, at least you’ll know you’ve done all you can.

This was one of my favorite moments on my vacation – watching the sun set on a beach along the Oregon coast. Hearing the waves crash is so peaceful. I took a little time to relax and really soak it all in… and I remembered how much easier it is to experience everything life has to offer when you have your health.
