Dunkin’ Donuts is trying to change its image by going largely trans-fat free. Whoa – does that mean there will be a healthy doughnut?

Not quite. Here’s the deal…

Dunkin’ Donuts announced it has developed an alternative cooking oil and reformulated more than 50 menu items, including doughnuts. The chain says its menu items will be “zero grams trans fat” by October 15 at its 5,400 restaurants across the country. Some locations have already made the switch to a new blend of palm, soybean and cottonseed oils.

The chain doesn’t claim it will become “trans fat free,” but says any trans fat in its foods will be less than half a gram per serving – federal regulations allow food labels to say they’ve got zero grams of trans fat if they fall below the half-gram threshold.

The nutrition advocacy group – Center for Science in the Public Interest – welcomed the change but cautioned the doughnuts are still not healthy because they are mostly white flour, sugar, and fat.

Dunkin’ Donuts says its goal was not to make a healthy doughnut, but rather “to create a doughnut that was better.”
