Just a few months ago, the Food and Drug Administration warned us not to buy or take these 28 weight loss products because they have dangerous ingredients. Now that list is up to 72 products.

Some of them are marketed as dietary supplements, and sold on Web sites and in some stores and beauty salons. The FDA says the products claim to be “natural” or to contain only “herbal” ingredients, but they actually have potentially harmful ingredients that are not listed on the products’ labels or in their ads.

Some of the ingredients that concern the FDA include:

• sibutramine – an appetite suppressant available by prescription only and a controlled substance
• fenproporex – a controlled substance not approved for marketing in the United States
• fluoxetine – an antidepressant available by prescription only
• bumetanide – a potent diuretic available by prescription only
• furosemide – a potent diuretic available by prescription only
• rimonabant – a drug not approved for marketing in the United States
• cetilistat – an experimental obesity drug not approved for marketing in the United States
• phenytoin – an anti-seizure medication available by prescription only
• phenolphthalein – a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent that is not approved for marketing in the United States

The FDA is in the process of recalling these weight loss products. Some of them have potentially harmful ingredients including a controlled substance, a solution used in chemical experiments, and a suspected cancer causing agent. Some are marketed as “dietary supplements,” and are sold both online and in stores.

The products can cause serious health problems including high blood pressure, seizures, palpitations, heart attack or stroke.

If you have used any of these products, the FDA recommends you stop taking them and talk to your doctor immediately.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) narrows its earlier warning on jalapeno peppers as the investigation into the salmonella outbreak continues. The FDA now says to avoid only raw jalapeno peppers from Mexico – it believes the ones grown in the U.S. are not connected to the nearly 1,300 salmonella cases reported since April.

For weeks, tomatoes had been the main suspect in the salmonella illnesses. Those now on the market are considered safe to eat, but health officials say tomatoes may still have made some people sick earlier during this outbreak.

There’s a break in the salmonella investigation – the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says a jalapeno pepper grown in Mexico and processed in Texas has tested positive for the strain of salmonella that has made more than 1,200 people sick over the past few months. But the FDA stresses the case is not closed yet.

While finding the genetic match is important, authorities still don’t know where the pepper became tainted – did it happen on the farm in Mexico… in the plant in McAllen, Texas… or somewhere in between?

Just a few days ago, the FDA lifted its warning on tomatoes, saying it’s okay to eat them again. But investigators say tomatoes still may have caused some of the illnesses.

Because of this latest finding, the FDA says we should avoid eating fresh jalapeño and serrano peppers and foods made with fresh jalapeños. It’s okay to eat pickled and preserved jalapeños.

The outbreak isn’t over yet, but at least it seems to be slowing down – the CDC has confirmed just 14 cases since July 4.

You won’t be able to get tomatoes at many restaurants until the salmonella outbreak is under control. The recent news about salmonella prompted several chains – including McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, and Chipotle to stop serving them temporarily as a precaution. Grocery stores are also being cautious and have pulled tomatoes off the shelves.

Yesterday, I told you how the Food and Drug Administration expanded its warning nationwide, telling us not to eat any uncooked Roma, plum, or red round tomatoes or any products made with them unless they are on this “safe” list. Personally, I think it’s easier just to avoid any of the tomatoes mentioned above until this is over and just stick to the ones not affected at all: cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, or homegrown tomatoes are okay to eat.

Since mid April, a salmonella outbreak has made 145 people sick across the country, including 23 who had to be hospitalized. The FDA is still trying to find where it all started.

Don’t eat any raw Roma, plum, or red round tomatoes or any products made with them unless they are on this list – they could be contaminated with a rare type of salmonella (Salmonella Saintpaul), warns the Food and Drug Administration. Until now, the warning was limited to just a few states.

The FDA says it’s okay to eat cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, or tomatoes grown at home.

Since mid April, a salmonella outbreak has made 145 people sick across the country, including 23 who had to be hospitalized. States reporting illnesses linked to the outbreak include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. In healthy people, symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. If you have recently eaten raw tomatoes or foods made with them and have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away.

The FDA is still investigating how this outbreak started.
