Yes, you read that right – the fried seafood fast food chain is going healthy… at least with some of its choices like the tilapia pictured above. It’s all part of Long John Silver’s new Freshside Grille menu.

Each entrée is served on top of a bed of seasoned rice (270 calories, 4.5 fat grams) and comes with a breadstick (170 calories, 3.5 fat grams). Full meals also come with a new vegetable medley (50 calories, 2 fat grams) and corn on the cob (150 calories, 10 fat grams). You can see how all the extras can really add up! So, don’t forget to include them in your totals.

The new menu will be available at all Long John Silver’s restaurants by the end of this month.

Yum Brands Inc. – the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s and A&W All-American Food – is going to start posting calories on menu boards in its restaurants nationwide.

Yum says it wants to provide the info so we can make better-informed choices about what we eat. (Yay Yum!) The calorie counts will be based on an individual serving size, not on say, a whole pizza or a bucket of chicken. The company will start posting calories on menu boards this year and finish the project by January 1, 2011.

The announcement comes on the heels of California’s new way of revealing calories – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law Tuesday that requires restaurants with 20 or more locations in the state to post the calorie count of each menu item. New York City also requires chains to post calorie counts on menus.

Yum also says it will stop advertising its products on television programs aimed at children under 12. (Yay again!)

I wonder if posting calories will hurt the sales of the foods that are higher in calories. It will be interesting to find out.
