He did it! Manuel Uribe got hitched! The heaviest man in the world (according to Guinness World Records) hasn’t left his bed in six years and had to have a flatbed truck take him to the ceremony. But he did it – he married his longtime girlfriend Claudia Solis Sunday in northern Mexico.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Uribe broke into tears during the civil ceremony attended by more than 400 guests.

Uribe’s mother, told the AP her son stayed away from the five-tier wedding cake.

Uribe used to weigh more than 1,200 pounds. But after years of diet, exercise and medical care, he has lost more than 550 pounds. He says he’s shooting for a new title now: “World’s Greatest Weight Loser.” I hope he gets that title! Go Manuel!

The obesity epidemic isn’t just a problem here in the United States. Mexico is on track to catch up with us within a decade as one of the world’s fattest countries, according to the Mexican government.

Hence the new campaign, Vamos Por Un Million de Kilos (Let’s Lose a Million Kilos), a national program to get Mexicans to shed about 2 million pounds altogether. The project includes requiring more physical education in public schools and encouraging employers and unions to give workers time for exercise.

Jalapenos are not the only peppers definitely linked to the massive salmonella outbreak. The Food and Drug Administration has found contaminated serrano peppers and irrigation water on a farm in Mexico.

The FDA says we should avoid fresh serrano peppers from Mexico and products made with them. And we still should not eat fresh jalapeno peppers from Mexico, either.

The FDA’s theory is that several foods may be causing the outbreak, which has made 1,319 people sick nationwide since April.

In early June, the FDA believed tomatoes were causing the outbreak and warned us not to eat certain types. Then in July, it said all tomatoes were safe to eat again. But the agency still says tomatoes may have caused some of the illnesses.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) narrows its earlier warning on jalapeno peppers as the investigation into the salmonella outbreak continues. The FDA now says to avoid only raw jalapeno peppers from Mexico – it believes the ones grown in the U.S. are not connected to the nearly 1,300 salmonella cases reported since April.

For weeks, tomatoes had been the main suspect in the salmonella illnesses. Those now on the market are considered safe to eat, but health officials say tomatoes may still have made some people sick earlier during this outbreak.
